The Public Works Department is seeking a highly motivated and results-oriented Street Maintenance Worker I/II for the Street division. Depending on the candidate's qualifications, the vacancy will be filled at either Street Maintenance Worker Level 1 or Level 2. The successful candidate will work at the City’s Municipal Service Center in the Newbury Park area of Thousand Oaks.
Primary responsibilities:
- Breaks and removes concrete using a hydraulic breaker and handwork
- Repair or replace cracked, raised, sunken, or otherwise damaged sidewalks, curbs, and gutters
- Perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance, repair, and cleaning of streets, curbs, gutters, storm drains, and related structures
- Perform heavy manual labor in the removal, repair, and finish of concrete and asphalt work
- Operate and maintain a variety of maintenance and construction equipment, including hand and power tools, and light, medium, and heavy motorized equipment
- Conduct traffic control when working in traffic areas of the City; install street barricades and cones; direct and control traffic around work sites
- Maintain records of work performed
The ideal candidate should possess:
- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade
- Experience in streets or public works-related maintenance and construction work
- The ability to sit, stand, and walk on level or slippery surfaces; and lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more; work in inclement weather conditions
- High attention to detail
- Pride in their personal work product; demonstrate initiative, and be safety conscious
- Proficient computer skills
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, including excellent customer service skills
- Attention to detail and accuracy with recordkeeping
- A team player approach and motivation; affinity for new challenges
- A valid Class C California driver’s license
Requirements:
Level I: Ability to obtain a valid Class B California driver’s license with tanker endorsement within six months of employment.
Level II: Two years of experience at a level comparable to the Street Maintenance Worker I with the City. A valid Class B California driver’s license with tanker endorsement.
Perform after-hours emergency work on an “as-needed” basis and on-call duties on a rotating basis. Must be able to respond to on-call responsibilities at the Municipal Service Center within 30 minutes.
Work Schedule: Monday – Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Special Requirement:
- Classification is part of the US Department of Transportation (DOT) program and is regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA). Pre-employment and random drug testing are requirements of the program.
- Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) to obtain a valid Class B California driver's license
- In accordance with Cal/OSHA regulations, in order to get an airtight face seal while working with a respirator, employees in this position may be required to be clean-shaven (no beards, long mustaches, long sideburns, or lengthy head hair).
