Job Summary
This position involves skilled emergency response work focused on the protection of life and property. Firefighters respond to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergencies under the supervision of company officers. Work involves fire suppression, emergency medical care, rescue operations, and daily station and equipment maintenance. Firefighters are expected to participate actively in training, maintain required certifications, and perform duties in a safe, professional, and effective manner.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Responds promptly and efficiently to fire, rescue, and medical emergencies.
- Engages in firefighting activities including deploying and operating hose lines, operating nozzles, climbing ladders, ventilating structures, and conducting forcible entry.
- Performs search and rescue operations and assists in evacuations.
- Provides emergency medical care at the EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, or EMT-Paramedic level, as certified.
- Operates and maintains fire apparatus and equipment; may serve as apparatus Driver/Operator when assigned.
- Conducts salvage and overhaul operations to minimize property damage.
- Attends daily drills, training, and ongoing educational programs to maintain proficiency and certifications.
- Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of fire stations, grounds, apparatus, and equipment.
- Participates in public education, fire prevention, and community outreach efforts.
- Maintains accurate reports and documentation as required by the department.
- Fosters a positive and cooperative work environment with fellow firefighters, officers, and the public.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by a supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
- Must successfully complete the department’s initial recruit training program.
- Must pass the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council (GFSTC) certification test within three (3) attempts following recruit training.
- Must possess and maintain one of the following valid Georgia certifications:
- Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B)
- Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate (EMT-I)
- Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (EMT-P)
- Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Class E or F Driver’s License, or obtain it within a department-established timeframe.
- Must meet all departmental medical, physical, and background requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Ability to function effectively under high stress and emergency conditions.
- Strong teamwork, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Knowledge of firefighting principles, EMS protocols, rescue techniques, and incident command systems.
- Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Familiarity with county geography, road systems, and hydrant locations.
- Proficiency in computer use and common software applications (Microsoft Office Suite, reporting systems, etc.).
- Commitment to professional growth and continuous improvement.
Work Environment
- Duties are performed in varied indoor and outdoor settings, often under hazardous and physically demanding conditions.
- Exposure to extreme temperatures, smoke, fire, heights, hazardous materials, bodily fluids, and infectious diseases.
- Administrative and training duties may involve extended periods of sitting or computer use.
Licenses And Certifications Required
- Completion of Gordon County Fire Department Recruit Training Program
- Georgia Firefighter Certification through GFSTC (must be passed within three attempts)
- Georgia EMT-B, EMT-I, or EMT-P Certification (must be obtained and maintained)
- Valid Georgia Class E or F Driver’s License
