Job Description

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The Assistant Director of DNA Investigations will oversee two subcommands within the Forensic Investigations Unit – the Office of Chief Medical Examiner Liaison Unit (OCMELU) and the emerging Investigative Genetic Genealogy Squad (IGGS). The Assistant Director of DNA Investigations will be of an equivalent rank to their counterparts in the OCME and will be positioned to ensure the best interests of the Department are represented when policy decisions are being changed or implemented. The Assistant Director of DNA Investigations will ensure all evidence collected by the Department is properly verified by OCMELU and only the most probative evidence that conforms to OCME testing policy is submitted for DNA analysis. The Assistant Director of DNA Investigations will ensure the procedures and protocols of the IGGS adhere to the “DOJ Interim Policy on Forensic Genetic Genealogical DNA Analysis and Searching.” The Assistant Director of DNA Investigations will assist the Commanding Officer, FIU, in developing plans and budgets to address training needs and the professional development needs of current and new personnel. The Assistant Director of DNA Investigations will ensure collaboration and coordination with case investigators, OCME, District Attorney’s Office (DAOs), and investigative genetic genealogy companies to identify and/ or recommend potential cases. The Assistant Director of DNA Investigations will have final approval of all IGGS cases submitted for genetic genealogy. The Assistant Director of DNA Investigations will be the final arbiter between the IGGS and the OCME IGG Coordinator. The Assistant Director of DNA Investigations will collaborate with DAO Executives to resolve issues and ensure their needs are being met.

CRIMINALIST ASSISTANT DIRECTOR - 2184C

Minimum Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, with specialization in criminalistics, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physics, molecular genetics, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, entomology, anthropology, ecology or a closely related scientific or engineering field.

Preferred Skills

The ideal candidate must be proactive, data-driven and have excellent verbal and written communication with the ability to explain complex DNA results and genealogical concepts to non-experts. The preferred candidate would have prior work experience as a DNA interpreting analyst in a forensic laboratory, with working knowledge of the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), New York State Familial Search Regulations, and New York State Department of Health Forensic Identity Approved Laboratories for Investigative Genetic Genealogy.

Residency Requirement

New York City Residency is not required for this position.
