The Library Assistant is responsible for assisting patrons by performing a variety of functions including, but not limited to circulation and registration, placing reserves, reference service, assisting patrons in finding materials to match reading interests, and organizing programs for children and adults. The position requires working closely with all staff and branch personnel. Work assignments may require working at headquarters or branch locations.
The incumbent is responsible for the timeliness and quality of his or her own work. Work is performed independently under the supervision of the Library Administrator with work direction from the Assistant Library Administrator or Community Librarians.
Provides patron assistance, performs catalog and equipment upkeep, and performs standard library duties.
Performs the circulation desk routine including checking materials in or out; collects fines and fees; answers directional and reference questions; processes, reserves and takes holds; answers circulation questions; registers patrons; works efficiently and accurately with library computer automation system; and assists patrons in finding material to match reading interests;
Assists patrons with library equipment and related software, troubleshooting, equipment, and collecting related usage fees;
Inspects material condition and prepares materials for shelving, cleans and repairs library materials and equipment as needed;
Processes materials for circulation including adding periodical holdings to bibliographic records;
Maintains a quiet library environment by addressing disruptive behavior;
Performs facility opening and closing procedures.
Responsible for assisting with service improvements, inter-library performance, and some public relations.
Performs inter-library loan duties, including locating materials in-house or via computer maintaining records;
Compiles and reports statistics to the Library Administrator;
Develops senior citizen, adult, children’s, young adult, reading programs, book discussion groups, educational/public interest programs and other library-sponsored programs as assigned by supervisor;
Maintains all rotations; prepares items for delivery and all related functions and paperwork;
Performs public relation duties as required including radio interviews, news releases, posters and interaction with patrons;
Assists with supervision of pages, library volunteers, and community service workers.
Performs Other Related Functions as Apparent or Assigned.
This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, plus one year of experience with general clerical skills, including typing, filing, computer skill; or any equivalent combination of experience and/or training. The job requires a driver’s license.
- Knowledge of current library principles, methods, and practices in sorting, circulation, and clerical responsibilities;
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working, relationships with supervisor, co-workers, library patrons, and other agencies while working under pressure;
- Strong computer and research skills, including word processing and Excel, and working knowledge of other common office equipment;
- Ability to prioritize duties, multi-task, and work alone with limited supervision, numerous interruptions, and monitoring youth patrons;
- Ability to Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers;
- Ability to observe work hours including evening hours and weekends;
