Deputy City Manager

The Deputy City Manager partners with Arvada’s City Manager and leadership team to lead strategic planning and problem-solving initiatives for the organization. As one of two Deputy City Managers, this role oversees key citywide operational-focused work systems including Community and Economic Development, Vibrant Community and Neighborhoods, Infrastructure and Emergency Management. Essential Job Functions include partnering with the City Manager to lead strategic planning and problem-solving initiatives; serving as an effective member of the executive leadership team; communicating and interacting effectively with city council, government officials, business owners, boards, citizen groups, media, employees, and the public; leading strategic business planning; overseeing large-scale programs and projects; leading and collaborating with the Executive Leadership Team; conducting policy analysis and directing task forces; recommending changes to ordinances, codes, policies, and programs; collaborating on budget development and financial modeling; promoting alignment with the City’s vision, mission, and core values; developing new internal organizations; providing guidance to department heads; communicating effectively with employees; monitoring responses to inquiries and requests; providing budget and fiscal management; delegating authority and accountability; serving as City Manager in their absence; overseeing day-to-day leadership activities; traveling to meetings and events; and representing the department. Other duties include filling vacant Director positions, representing the City on various boards and commissions, and performing other assigned duties. Supervisory duties include developing staff work plans, conducting performance appraisals, making personnel decisions, coaching and supporting staff, encouraging creative thinking and participatory decision making, and providing training and professional growth opportunities. Knowledge, skills, and abilities required include expert knowledge of public administration, strong leadership, strategic thinking, project management, analytical skills, business and financial acumen, effective communication, and the ability to operate a motor vehicle. A valid Colorado driver’s license is required. Education required is a Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration or related field, with a Master's Degree preferred. Work experience required is ten years of progressively responsible municipal management experience and five years of supervisory experience. Physical demands are minimal, typical of clerical work, primarily sedentary with occasional lifting. Work environment includes routine office noise and equipment exposure.
