Summary
Investigates and takes appropriate enforcement action for violations of city-wide animal cruelty laws and animal regulatory laws. Ensures safety of both citizens and animal welfare regarding animal control.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Responds to citizen calls (about 20 per day with full staffing) to perform the following: picks up strays, removes and disposes of deceased animals including domestic and wild animals, livestock and snakes (venomous)
- Responds to fire or police emergencies if animals present
- Interacts with agitated and injured animals involved in stressful situations
- Enforces animal control ordinances, investigate bites, informs citizens of laws, issues citations for non-compliance and appears in court on behalf of the City
- Answers and dispatches activities for Animal Services and prepares reports accordingly
- Scrubs, disinfects, and dries the kennel area
- Supplies animals with fresh food, clean water, and clean bedding
- Performs custodial duties to maintain the general cleanliness of the facility and grounds
- Assists in preparing animals for euthanasia and in properly disposing of remains
- Prepares specimens for rabies submission samples
- Accepts, receives, and / or collects payments
- Assists customers daily at the shelter with intakes, reclaims, and adoptions
- Maintains status of compliance with adopted and reclaimed animals
- Participates in monthly on-call rotation (Monday 5pm to the following Monday 8am) - receives standby pay
- Organizes and directs volunteers as assigned
- Follows policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- One (1) year of experience working with animals in an animal hospital, shelter, or related animal facility
- Knowledge of procedures used in the humane care, feeding, handling and restraining of animals
- Able to maintain certifications by completing CEU’s as required
- Pre-exposure Rabies Vaccine or current titer completed within 6 months of employment
- Pass extensive criminal background check and polygraph evaluation
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Requirements
- Valid driver’s license
- Obtain Animal Control Officer Certification within one year
- Obtain Certified Euthanasia Technician training within 120 days after hire
