SUMMARY OF POSITIONS
The City of McKinney is currently seeking two dynamic and motivated leaders to join our Parks & Recreation Department as Assistant Directors. These critical positions offer a unique opportunity to help shape the future of our community's recreational and outdoor spaces.
Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation – Recreation
- Responsible for overseeing the planning, development, and management of recreational programs and services.
- Leads teams involved in community programming, center based special events, and facility operations.
- Collaborates with community partners to promote inclusive and innovative recreational opportunities for all residents.
- Provides direct supervision of the Recreation Manager, Recreation Supervisors & Aquatics Supervisor
- Provides monthly updates on recreation activities for the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Advisory Board
Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation – Parks Maintenance
- Responsible for the oversight and strategic management of park grounds and facilities.
- Leads maintenance teams and ensures that all city parks, trails, and open spaces are safe, clean, and well-maintained.
- Provides direct supervision of Parks Superintendent & Athletics Supervisor.
- Provides monthly updates on Parks Maintenance for the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Advisory Board

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists in the development, planning, and implementation of goals and objectives for Parks and Recreation activities and programs and recommends and administer policies and procedures.
- Assists in the development, monitoring, and coordination of the departmental annual budgets and recreation center revenue accounts, which include operating accounts and capital improvement projects.
- Develops reports and make presentations and recommendations to the City Manager, City Council, and other City departments, as well as various boards, agencies, and community groups.
- Assists with directing and overseeing the development of the Parks and Recreation Department’s work plan; assigns work activities, projects, and programs; monitors workflow and reviews; and evaluates work products, methods, and procedures.
- Attends and participates in professional groups and committees and stays abreast of trends and developments in parks and recreation planning and programming.
- Responds to and resolves difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints.
- Assists in the development and implementation of annual departmental goals, objectives, performance measures, and strategic plans.
- Analyzes customer needs and service deficiencies and recommends resources and programs.
If Assigned to Parks Maintenance Division:
- Provides direct supervision of Parks Superintendent & Athletics Supervisor.
- Provides monthly updates on parks activities for the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Advisory Board.
If Assigned to Recreation Division:
- Provides direct supervision of the Recreation Manager, Recreation Supervisors & Aquatics Supervisor,
- Provides monthly updates on recreation activities for the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Advisory Board.

- Ability to apply principles of logical or synthesis functions.
- Ability to deal with several concrete and abstract variables, and to analyze major problems that require complex planning for interrelated activities that can span one or several work units.
- Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the direction, control, and planning of an entire program or set of programs.
- Ability to perform skilled coordinated movements, such as utilizing an engineering scale, drafting table, planimeter, calculator, and computer terminal.
- Ability to work in a team environment; contribute as a team member and treat co-workers, subordinates, and customers with respect.
- Builds professional relationships with internal staff and customers.

Required Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the below Minimum Qualifications may be an acceptable substitute.
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Parks Management/Administration or closely related field supplemented by five (5) years previous management and supervisory experience that includes parks operation, revenue management, and administration.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Leisure Professional Certificate preferred.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Must pass a drug screen, driving record check, and background check.
- Must have a Class C Texas Driver’s License
Physical Demands/Supplemental
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation, or picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling. Tasks may require the ability to determine color, depth perception, and field vision. Tasks may involve use or repair of small/light equipment and exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Tasks may risk exposure to extreme heat/cold or extreme weather conditions.
