The Communications Internship is designed to provide an on-the-job opportunity to gain “real world” work experience in a career-related professional workforce environment. This is an administrative internship program.
This internship will provide valuable hands-on experience to a candidate looking for opportunities in an in-house communications and marketing setting, with the flexibility to focus on areas the candidate is interested in.
The role will require and vary from 15-25 hours per week and offers flexibility in work hours. The rate of compensation is $15 per hour. It is anticipated that the internship will last approximately 10 weeks.
The ideal candidate will have an interest in local government and public communications. This position will support the Public Information Director, Assistant Public Information Director and Public Relations Coordinator with a variety of communication and multimedia projects.
The candidate will be responsible for creating and coordinating content for various communication channels including social media, the Dare County website, newsletters, press releases and more. The position requires good verbal and written communication skills, as well as experience with social media. Other preferred skills include website content management, marketing, content development, photography and photograph editing, and video experience.
Producing photos for a variety of communication platforms including social media, website and government access channel
Developing informational social media campaigns
Increasing engagement on the Dare County social media accounts
Ensuring ADA compliance on the county’s website
Managing the Dare County Public Relations editorial calendar
Maintaining the department's databases, including the department's digital library
Assisting with event planning and execution for county events
Assisting with setup and engagement at outreach events
Ideal Majors: Communications/Journalism, Public Relations, Graphic Design or Marketing
Strong written and oral communication skills while also possessing good research and problem-solving skills.
Familiarity with multimedia content creation, including but not limited to photography, data visualizations, infographics, etc.
Understanding of graphic design tools, including Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.
Strong computer skills, including knowledge of basic business software (Google Suite, email, presentations) and basic office equipment.
A self-starter who can respond professionally to feedback and has a strong work ethic and desire to learn.
Curiosity and the ability to think creatively and flexibly.
Regular attendance is a necessary and essential job duty.
Interns are responsible for their own living arrangements.
This paid internship is open to current college students who exhibit a positive attitude, enjoy working as part of a team and have the ability to multitask.
Preference will be given to upperclassmen.
