Description

Join the City of Durango's Finance Department as a Budget Analyst. In this fast-paced role, you'll be an important part of a small, dedicated team managing the City's approximately $229 million budget. This includes everything from planning, development, and preparation to crucial reporting that directly supports the City's strategic plan. You'll also contribute to our Performance Excellence initiatives, help design and improve processes, manage performance metrics, and create data-driven solutions across all City departments.

Essential Job Duties

What You’ll Do in This Role:

  • Maintain collaborative relationships with City departments by providing administrative and operational support, including analysis, budget preparation, and organizational studies.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly financial reports, long-term forecasts, and budget trend analyses to support informed decision making.
  • Review city-wide budget submissions for accuracy and completeness, ensuring alignment with strategic goals, performance measures, and updates.
  • Support leadership in defining needs, determining deliverables, and developing project plans that advance the City’s strategic priorities.
  • Analyze data to inform Strategic Plan discussions and track meaningful performance results.
  • Contribute to operational and cost improvement initiatives across the organization by offering analytical and project support.

Minimum Qualifications

You Have:

  •  A bachelor’s degree with major coursework in finance, business, public administration, marketing, project management, quality or process improvement, or a related field.
  • Two years of experience (preferred but not required) in finance, budgeting, process improvement, project management, or a related field.

You Will Thrive in This Role if You:
  • Love numbers and forecasting. You enjoy working with budgetary data daily to provide meaningful insights and accurate financial forecasts.
  • Learn quickly. You’re able to rapidly understand and support the budgets of various departments, providing meaningful analysis to support informed decision-making.
  • Build relationships. You connect with department heads, division managers, frontline employees, and other City staff to understand operations and reflect those realities in budget dashboards and data analysis.
  • Follow up and follow through. You consistently follow up and follow through to ensure projects, deliverables, and office initiatives are accurate and complete.
  • Work collaboratively and take initiative. You contribute as part of a cross-functional team while also taking independent action when needed—and you know when to bring others in.
  • Think strategically. You develop business intelligence strategies to address moderately complex challenges related to specific programs, functions, or service areas.
  • Manage time effectively. You demonstrate strong time management skills, balancing multiple responsibilities and priorities with efficiency.
  • Make balanced decisions. You thoughtfully consider multiple—and sometimes conflicting—factors when making decisions.
