Summary

Responsible for reporting and executing hedges to maintain the Denton Municipal Electric (DME) energy portfolio including, but not limited to, monitoring, analyzing, and responding to changes in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) power, natural gas, and Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) markets that impact the portfolio.

DUTIES

  • Execute trades for the DME energy portfolio consisting of load, dispatchable and renewable supply resources, fuel, and environmental products in the wholesale markets to ensure effective portfolio optimization while mitigating exposure to market risks. 
  • Implement strategies establishing and optimizing forward term power, natural gas, and REC (environmental) hedging activities within the ERCOT market.
  • Monitor market fundamental and technical conditions, price activity and impacting regulatory changes to identify opportunities to hedge identified risks.
  • Analyze portfolio risk exposure and performance metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of hedging strategies; provide recommendations for adjustments, as needed.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop, explain, and execute hedging strategies aligned with the organizational risk policy, hedge plan and financial objectives.
  • Function as liaison with internal and external stakeholders to execute transactions and negotiate favorable terms.
  • Ensure all work activities are compliant with regulatory requirements, DME Energy Risk Management Policy, risk management procedures, and the Hedge Plan including, but not limited to, forward term power and natural gas hedging activities. 
  • Assist with development and maintenance of robust reporting tools and dashboards to track hedging performance, analyze results, and communicate insights to senior management.
  • Provide regular updates on futures positions, credit requirements to support such activity, and proposed strategy changes due to changing technical and fundamental market conditions to internal and external stakeholders, as requested. 
  • Assist with coordinating Energy Trading Risk Management (ETRM) system changes, make recommendations for system improvement including, but not limited to, trade entry, position reporting, and risk metrics; provide training on ETRM trade entry and position tracking, as appropriate.
  • Stay abreast of energy markets developments, industry trends, and regulatory changes; evaluate information to improve hedging strategies and optimize portfolio performance.

Job Requirements

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Business Analytics, Quantitative Sciences, Accounting, or related field; and,
  • Five (5) years’ experience in energy trading, risk management, or portfolio optimization directly related to forward term power, natural gas, and REC hedging within the ERCOT market; and, 
OR
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.
 
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
An individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The list below represents the knowledge, skill, and/or ability to perform this job successfully:
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local Government laws, ordinances, regulations procedures, and methods used in energy market operations.
  • Knowledge of project management principles, including the ability to review and recommend project improvements based on scope and budget.
  • Knowledge of electric generation fuel requirements, regional transmission organization (RTO) protocols with ERCOT, and North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) operating protocols and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of energy buying/selling, power markets and dispatch economics, and of power and natural gas markets, including market fundamentals, trading strategies, trade execution in physical and financial markets.
  • Knowledge of resource, power plant and transmission system dispatch/response operations.
  • Skill in analyzing and researching, to interpret and understand policies, laws, and regulations, and to provide workable recommendations and solutions that maintain compliance.
  • Skill in problem solving; identifying problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions. 
  • Skill at the intermediate level, working with applicable Microsoft Office 365 products, and other software systems to complete work.
  • Skill in quantitative analysis, statistical modeling, optimization techniques, and performing mathematical calculations accurately.
  • Skill in providing exceptional service to internal and external customers. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and written forms, for the needs of the audience including, but not limited to, simplifying communication of complex commodity trading practices and risk management techniques.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to handle records and complex situations of a confidential nature.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law)
  • Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, employment history verification, and social security number verification.
