The City of Rancho Palos Verdes is seeking a passionate and experienced Recreation Program Supervisor to lead operations at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center and to facilitate events at Founder’s Park.
This position is open on a continuous basis and can close without notice at any time. The first application screening is scheduled for the week of May 19, 2025.
DEPARTMENT
The Recreation and Parks Department is responsible for managing and operating a comprehensive park system, administering services in the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve and coordinating numerous community activities and events. The Recreation and Parks Department oversees departmental administration, recreational facilities, programs and classes, special events, the REACH program serving the needs of the developmentally disable community, support services, and open space management.
POSITION
This is an exempt position covered by the Rancho Palos Verdes Employees Association. The Recreation Program Supervisor will be responsible for assigning, supervising and reviewing the work of part-time staff in the assigned facility or park location. This includes creating monthly work schedules; coordinating and scheduling staff training; establishing and enforcing employee safety procedures; oversight of the City's open space areas and parking lot financial and functional operations.
The Recreation Program Supervisor oversees the Point Vicente Interpretive Center—a community gem nestled along the scenic Palos Verdes coastline. This unique facility features a museum highlighting the natural and cultural history of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, a gift shop, beautiful park grounds, a native plant garden, and one of Southern California’s premier gray whale watching locations. The site also offers a stunning banquet room with breathtaking ocean views, available to rent for meetings, weddings, and private events.
This facility serves as the hub for the dedicated Los Serenos de Point Vicente docent volunteer organization that offers educational programming, guided tours and nature walks. The Recreation Program Supervisor will play a key role in supporting and coordinating with this vital group.
In addition to overseeing the Interpretive Center, this position is also responsible for managing events at Founders Park, a picturesque blufftop location known for its panoramic ocean views and popular use for wedding ceremonies.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated, enthusiastic, customer service-oriented team player with knowledge and experience managing recreation facilities, museums, volunteers, rentals and administering recreation programs and events. A successful incumbent possesses excellent written, oral, and public communication skills and can work independently with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate will be highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and priorities.
The ideal candidate must possess the ability to supervise and delegate assignments to staff, as well as mentoring, inspiring and empowering staff. The candidate should have strong analytical and writing skills to allow for interpretation of regulations/policies; as well as excellent interpersonal skills enabling the candidate to work cohesively within workgroups.
If you really want to stand out, experience with or the ability to learn point of sale software systems, recreation management systems and museum cataloging systems, including ActiveNet, PastPerfect. Cougar Mountain, and Tyler MUNIS, is highly desirable.
DEFINITION AND CLASS CHARACTERISTICS Under general direction, plans, directs, administers, and manages the City's largest recreation program(s) and/or facility(ies); plans, directs, coordinates, and participates in various special projects and community events as assigned; provides highly responsible technical and professional staff assistance to the Deputy Director of Recreation and Parks; and performs related work as required.
This is the full supervisory-level class in the Recreation series responsible for program development, administrative activities, and the supervision of day-to-day operational functions of the largest and/or most complex program(s) within the Recreation Division. Incumbents are responsible for supervising and evaluating the work of full-time, part-time, contract, and temporary employees and volunteers. This class is distinguished from the Deputy Director of Recreation and Parks in that the latter has overall division, budgetary and administrative responsibility for the Recreation Division and serves as "second in command" to the Director of Recreation and Parks.
