Job Summary

The Public Information Officer (PIO) serves as the primary liaison between Ellis County and the public, media, and other stakeholders. This role is responsible for developing and executing communication strategies that promote transparency, foster community engagement, and enhance the organization's public image. The PIO will manage media relations, oversee crisis communication efforts, and ensure consistent messaging across all communication platforms.

  

Working Conditions

  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required to attend events or respond to media inquiries.
  • Ability to travel to various locations within the community and region as needed.

Examples of Duties

Key Responsibilities

  • Media Relations & Public Engagement
    • Act as a spokesperson for Ellis County, representing the organization at media events, public meetings, and community functions.
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with local, state, and national media outlets, including print, broadcast, and digital platforms.
    • Respond to media inquiries, arrange interviews, and coordinate press conferences to disseminate information effectively.
    • Monitor media coverage and public sentiment to assess and adjust communication strategies as needed.
  • Content Creation & Distribution
    • Write, edit, and distribute press releases, legal notices, speeches, fact sheets, newsletters, and other informational materials.
    • Develop and maintain content for the organization's website and social media channels, ensuring timely and accurate updates.
    • Coordinate the production of multimedia content, including videos and graphics, to support communication efforts.
  • Commissioners’ Court Support 
  1. Assist in preparation for Commissioners Court, including agenda and power point slides.
  2. Prepare documents for Commissioners Court such as Resolutions, Proclamations, Recognitions, etc.
  • Crisis Communication
    • Working with the Emergency Management Coordinator, implement and manage crisis communication plans to provide timely and accurate information during emergencies or critical incidents.
    • May serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders during crises, ensuring consistent messaging.
    • Collaborate with the Emergency Management Coordinator to disseminate public safety information and updates.
  • Strategic Planning & Collaboration
    • Work closely with the County Judge and department heads to develop and execute communication strategies aligned with organizational goals.
    • Coordinate with internal teams to ensure consistent messaging and branding across all communication channels.
    • Provide media training and communication support to staff and officials as needed.
  • Community Relations & Outreach
    • Organize and participate in public events, town halls, and community outreach initiatives to engage with residents and stakeholders.
    • Develop programs and materials to educate the public about Ellis County's services, initiatives, and policies.
    • Gather and analyze public feedback to inform communication strategies and improve community relations.

 

Typical Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Education & Experience
    • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field preferred.
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience in public relations, media relations, or a related field, preferably within the public sector.
  • Skills & Abilities
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft clear and compelling messages.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, social media platforms, and content management systems.
    • Experience with media monitoring tools and analytics platforms.
    • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Certifications & Licenses
    • Must pass a criminal background check.
    • Valid class ‘C’ Texas Driver’s License

Vacation time is accrued after one year of service and granted on your anniversary date each consecutive year.

HOLIDAYS

After the first six months of employment, employees will accrue one 8-hour personal day on January 1st of each consecutive year.
