Under the general supervision of the Environmental Public Health (EPH) Supervisor, this position's primary purpose is to support the development and implementation of the County Materials Management Plan. Key responsibilities include data collection and analysis, community outreach, and collaboration with consultants to advance the county’s sustainability initiatives. It will assist the EPH Supervisor in creating educational materials and performing various administrative and operational tasks. A critical aspect of this role is fostering collaboration with businesses, state representatives, surrounding counties, and other local agencies to create a robust network that supports materials management efforts for Ottawa County. By gathering and analyzing data on collected materials, this role provides valuable insights to enhance the Environmental Sustainability Program and county initiatives. This position plays a vital role in promoting environmental stewardship and ensuring compliance with sustainability best practices.
This is a part-time, limited benefit position, working approximately 20-30 hours a week.
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:- Supports the creation and implementation of the County Materials Management Plan (MMP) by conducting research, gathering data, and assisting with strategy development.
- Gathers and analyzes data related to waste streams, recycling rates, and material recovery to inform MMP decisions and recommendations.
- Engages with residents, businesses, and local organizations to promote the MMP, gathers feedback, and encourages participation in sustainable material management practices.
- Assists in coordinating meetings and discussions with businesses, state representatives, surrounding counties, and local agencies to develop a strong regional network supporting the MMP.
- Helps to create educational materials, presentations, and social media content to increase awareness and understanding of the MMP’s goals and initiatives.
- Investigates successful MMP strategies from other communities and provides recommendations for implementation in Ottawa County.
- Compiles necessary data and material for reporting requirements for MMP and other grant-related activities.
- Assists in planning and facilitating meetings with stakeholders, community groups, and local agencies to discuss MMP progress and gather input.
- Summarizes research findings, data analysis, and stakeholder feedback into reports and presentations for county officials and community partners.
- Supports the development of policies and recommendations that align with the MMP and promote sustainable materials management practices.
- Tracks key performance indicators and evaluates the effectiveness of materials management initiatives to guide future improvements.
- Ensures alignment with state and regional materials management goals by maintaining regular communication with agencies such as the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and other relevant organizations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Associate's Degree or at least two years of technical schooling in environmental sciences, earth sciences, or a related field.
Required Knowledge and Skills:- Good organizational and analytical skills.
- Effective interpersonal and communication abilities.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including word-processing, spreadsheets, database management, GIS, and Internet research.
Licenses:Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.
Physical Requirements:Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation, including, but not limited to, visual and/or audiological appliances, and devices to increase mobility. Capability to perform fieldwork under various conditions.
Working Conditions:The position involves both office and fieldwork across Ottawa County. Fieldwork may include exposure to extreme temperatures or weather conditions, with potential hazards such as human waste, bloodborne pathogens, vermin, and insects. The position requires travel within the county to conduct inspections and investigations in diverse settings, from residential properties to commercial establishments.
