Hiring range for this position is $36,816.00 - $43,992.00. Initial placement for new employees is customarily at entry level through 35% percentile. Pay grade for this position is 12.
General Definition of Work:Performs responsible administrative support work involving the receipt of taxes and fees and the preparation and/or maintenance of fiscal or related records; does related work as required. This position requires strong attention to detail, proficiency in arithmetic, and the ability to handle large sums of money with integrity and accuracy. Work is performed under moderate supervision.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
Collecting and receipting tax payments; entering data; maintaining records.

•Research and assists taxpayers, realtors, mortgage companies with accounts, bills, questions, problems, and complaints for tax billing.
• Receive and receipt payments collected in-person at the frontline counter, through the mail, and other various ways adhering to County and departmental cash handling policies and procedures for real estate, personal property, business personal property, and motor vehicle GAP bills.
•Checks all payments to ensure they match amount on bill and signature; scans or stamps check for endorsement.
•Handles large volumes of cash, checks, and credit card payments daily; ensures payments are accurate and properly recorded.
•Ensures cash and mail payments match receipts, notes overages, shortages, and adjustments.
•Verify mobile home applications and issue moving permits.
•Regularly updates bills with comments to document phone calls and office visits.
•Provides courteous, efficient, and accurate customer service.
•Prepares and processes enforced collections according to delinquent lists and projects assigned.
•Assists with preparing and processing garnishments and bank attachments on delinquent lists.
•Research questions using a variety of sources and discretion in skip tracing.
•Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General knowledge of bookkeeping terminology, methods, procedures and equipment; general knowledge of standard office procedures, practices and equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to establish and follow detailed work procedures; ability to post accounts and to perform mathematical computations with speed and accuracy; skill to use a variety of office machines; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public; ability to work independently and cooperatively in a team setting.
Management Preferences:
- 2 years of Tax Collection experience with a local, state, or federal government entity preferred
- NCTCA NOR NCDOR certification strongly preferred
- Cash handling experience preferred
- Accounts Receivable Experience
- Excel ,Word, and Microsoft Outlook skills
- Good Customer Service Skills
- Foreign Language Skills is a plus (Spanish).
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Proven cash handling experience, including balancing large amounts of money, demonstrating proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, and possession of strong customer service is required. Prior work in a tax office or professional setting preferred.

Special Requirements:Completion of, or the ability to complete the NC School of Government for Fundamentals of Listing and Assessing and the Fundamentals of Tax Collection within three years of employment. Peak season overtime required.
Physical Requirements:
This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires reaching, standing, walking, data entry and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
