Under general supervision, operate and train other departmental personnel in the use of data processing equipment including computers, peripherals and word processors in an assigned division; produce and generate a variety of materials and reports on automated office equipment. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Operates a variety of data processing equipment and peripherals including computers, word processors, and printers; trains and assists departmental personnel in the operation and application of data processing equipment and related software; plans, formats, edits and generates a wide variety of materials on computers and word processors; produces reports, lists, announcements, invitations, manuals, agendas, graphics, booklets, brochures and correspondence; provides expertise and assistance concerning computer and software applications for specific assignments; plans data bases and input/output formats; trouble-shoots equipment malfunctions; identifies and resolves minor problems; refers technical difficulties to repair personnel according to established guidelines and service agreements; communicates with departmental personnel regarding training needs, equipment operation and scheduling of work requested; maintains current knowledge of the word processing and data processing equipment in assigned division; recommends the purchase of additional software as requested; maintains systems documentation as assigned; updates user manuals; maintains back-up disks/tapes for each system; monitors disk space available; maintains confidential files and password security systems; prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports related to input/output, production runs and departmental activities; performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of: Capabilities and application of data processing equipment; data base management systems; operation of a variety of computers and word processing equipment; basic programming concepts; training techniques; oral and written communication skills; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; modern office practices, procedures and equipment. Ability to: Operate automated office equipment including computers, peripherals and word processors; train others in the use of data processing equipment; format, edit and generate a wide variety of printed materials; communicate with users concerning equipment malfunctions, work schedules, production and training needs; link and extract data from related databases and web files as needed; prepare and update documentation and user manuals; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; model communication and interaction that respects and includes all individuals and their languages, abilities, religions and cultures; maintain records and prepare reports; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; meet schedules and timelines; plan and organize work.

Minimum Qualifications for this position: Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent, supplemented by course work or training in computer science. Experience: Two years experience in the operation of data processing equipment such as, word processors or personal computers. SPECIAL INFORMATION: A valid California driver’s license and the availability of private transportation or the ability to provide transportation between jobs sites is required.

Based On Full-time Assignment

  • Although new employees usually begin at the first salary step, advanced salary step placement may be requested
  • 12 vacation days per year, 18 after 7 years of service
