The City of Ramsey is seeking a skilled and motivated Engineering Technician II to support the planning, design, and construction of the City’s public infrastructure. This position plays a vital role in ensuring that Ramsey’s streets, utilities, and drainage systems are built to last — serving a growing community with quality and efficiency.
The Engineering Technician II performs a variety of technical civil engineering tasks, including construction inspection, materials testing, surveying, and plan review. The position also assists in maintaining engineering records, maps, and databases, while providing responsive service to contractors, developers, and residents. Occasional snow plowing and general maintenance support are also part of the role.
Key Responsibilities:
• Inspect public works construction projects (streets, sewer, water, and stormwater) to ensure compliance with City standards and specifications.
• Perform construction materials testing and coordinate test results with consultants and contractors.
• Assist with surveying, data collection, and construction layout.
• Support the design, drafting, and cost estimation of public works projects.
• Maintain and update infrastructure maps, as-built records, and engineering databases.
• Review plans and specifications for conformance with City design standards.
• Respond to public inquiries and service requests in a professional manner.
• Assist with snow plowing and general maintenance of City infrastructure during winter months.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and materials.
• Skill in reading and interpreting engineering plans and specifications.
• Ability to use standard computer software, CAD, and GIS applications.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills for recordkeeping and field documentation.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
• Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and assist with maintenance operations as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid Minnesota driver’s license in good standing.
• Completion of two (2) years of college-level coursework in civil engineering technology, surveying, or a related field.
---Two (2) years of municipal public works or civil construction experience may be substituted for each year of education.
• Ability to obtain State of Minnesota construction inspection certifications for bituminous, concrete field, grading & base, and stormwater management within one (1) year of hire.
• Successful completion of a criminal background check, driver’s license check, pre-employment physical, and drug screening.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Vocational or technical degree in civil engineering technology or a related field.
• Two (2) years of experience in construction inspection, surveying, or municipal engineering.
• Experience using CAD and GIS software.
• Valid Minnesota CDL (Class A or B) with air brake and tanker endorsements.

This full-time, non-exempt position includes a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, life, and disability insurance, vacation and sick leave, holiday pay, and participation in the PERA pension plan. Typical hours are Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m., with occasional overtime during construction or snow events.
