The Director of Public Works & Planning provides executive leadership for Maplewood’s infrastructure, engineering, and planning functions. This department head role integrates engineering, infrastructure management, and community planning under one vision: to advance sustainable development, resilient infrastructure, and a safe, accessible, and attractive public realm. The Director promotes a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement while ensuring compliance and professional standards across all operations. The role is central to implementing the city’s new Comprehensive Plan and 10-Year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP), two foundational documents guiding Maplewood’s next decade of investment, sustainability, and growth.
Reporting directly to the City Manager and a member of the city’s leadership team, the Director oversees engineering, capital project delivery, zoning administration, and facility asset management. The position provides in-house professional engineering review, strategic planning leadership, and coordination of transportation and multimodal projects. The director ensures that public infrastructure investments reflect the community’s long-term goals for accessibility, resilience, and neighborhood character.
