Summary
The Town of Shrewsbury, a full-service local government driven by high performance and creativity, is seeking a dedicated professional who cares deeply about their work, the community, and the lives of people around them to join the Building Inspector Team as an Assistant Building Inspector. This position is a great entry point for someone who has a strong construction background and understanding of state building code to enter the building official field. This position offers a great opportunity to work on a variety of projects.
What You’ll Do
- Enforces the applicable provisions of the Massachusetts State Building Code and the town zoning bylaw, and rules and regulations of the Architectural Access Board.
- Reviews building permit applications and conducts field inspections to ensure conformity with all code requirements, approved plans and zoning restrictions.
- Conducts periodic inspections of schools, restaurants, theaters, churches, places of assembly and apartment buildings, as required by statute.
- Investigates violations of the building code and zoning bylaw and conducts follow-up actions.
- Respond to the public’s questions pertaining to permits, building codes and bylaws.
- Meets with contractors, architects and engineers to conduct preliminary review of construction projects.
What You Bring
- Five years of experience in the supervision of building construction or design and zoning enforcement; or an Associate's Degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, in accordance with MGL c.143.
- Must be able to attain certification as a Massachusetts Local Inspector within the required timeline after starting or already possess certification. An uncertified candidate would need to be appointed conditionally and must submit an Examination Approval Request to the Massachusetts BOCC within 6 months of appointment and successfully complete all required exams within 12 months of appointment to attain certification.
- Valid driver’s license required
- Knowledge of the materials and methods of building construction and equipment and the Massachusetts State Building Code, local zoning bylaws and other applicable State statutes, rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of accepted requirements for building construction, fire prevention, light, ventilation and safe egress.
- Thorough knowledge of field inspection practices.
- Strong interpersonal skills, especially in the areas of customer service and public relations.

The Assistant Building Inspector works from the Building, Planning & Economic Development office suite at the Town Hall and is frequently working out of the office around Town, completing inspections.
