THIS IS A REGISTRATION RECRUITMENT
There is no examination for this recruitment. Persons who qualify will be placed on the registration list in accordance with their availability to work in the various geographical districts on the Island of Hawai`i and conditions of employment.The registration list will be used for Park Caretaker I permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.Positions vary in work hours and work schedules. Salary will be prorated for part-time positions. Must be available for stand-by-duty and be able to respond within 30 minutes to the baseyard in emergencies for the districts you indicated you are available to work (days, nights and weekends). - Cares for and maintains lawns, hedges, trees, and shrubbery by cleaning, picking up trash and pulling trash, planting, watering, fertilizing, trimming, mowing, sweeping, and raking.
- Assists in planting shrubbery and plants, sodding lawns, and propagating plants and shrubs from seeds, cuttings, and roots.
- Prepares burial plots, setting and aligning headstones, filling sunken grave sites, assisting mortuary personnel when requested, removing dead flowers, and keeping grave site clean and manicured.
- Prepare paperwork to include cemetery records, daily worksheets, work orders, etc. Notifies the public on departmental and cemetery rules and regulations. Assists the public in locating grave plots.
- Sprays insecticides and herbicides in order to eradicate harmful insects and weeds.
- Cleans comfort stations, pavilions, gymnasiums, swimming pools, water fountains, barbecue pits, and facilities located at the public parks and recreational areas, including office and administrative buildings.
- May operate a vehicle to transport equipment, materials, and employees; to travel from one park to another; and to deliver trash to staging area or transfer station; and maintains and services vehicle.
- Maintains athletic fields and baseball diamonds in good condition for play.
- Informs the public on the rules and ordinances applicable to the protection of public safety and public property.
- Operates light motorized or power equipment and tools as required.
- May make minor maintenance repairs such as but not limited to painting touch-ups and over graffiti; replacing door knobs and hinges; re-hanging new doors; boarding up broken entrances/windows; changing light bulbs; and replacing faucets, washers, and toilet floats.
- Makes simple oral or written reports.
- Occasionally assists in the various trades as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at the time of filing, as applicable to the position. (You will be required to submit a valid driver's license at the time of hire, if the position requires a driver's license).
Notes:- As applicable to the position, possession of a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate is required prior to appointment.

Knowledge of: the care and cultivation of shrubs, flowers, trees, and lawns; operation and care of janitorial and grounds maintenance equipment and tools.
Ability to: understand and follow oral and written instructions; operate hand and power equipment and tools used in janitorial and grounds maintenance; effectively and courteously interact with the general public; makes simple oral and written reports; and learn pertinent rules and ordinances and enforce them with tact and courtesy.
