General Purpose
The Hatch Fire Chief is a leadership and hands-on emergency response role responsible for managing the operations of the Hatch Volunteer Fire Department. The Fire Chief provides operational leadership, ensures personnel and equipment are ready, oversees training, and coordinates with county and state agencies. This position plays a vital role in protecting life and property by providing effective emergency response, planning, and maintaining fire services for the Town of Hatch.
Essential Functions
#### Emergency Response & Fire Operations
- Respond to emergency calls and pages for the Hatch Fire Department, including structure fires, wildfires, accidents, and other incidents.
- Ensure all firefighting and rescue operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in accordance with applicable protocols.
#### Training & Leadership
- Schedule and conduct monthly Hatch Fire Department meetings.
- Notify fire department volunteers of training opportunities, certifications, and drills.
- Support and mentor fire personnel in skill development and emergency preparedness.
- Attend Garfield County fire coordination meetings (bi-monthly).
#### Equipment & Facilities
- Ensure fire trucks, personal protective equipment (PPE), and firefighting apparatus are regularly inspected, maintained, and in operational condition.
- Coordinate necessary repairs, maintenance, or replacements.
#### Administration & Reporting
- File all required incident, training, and equipment reports in compliance with county, state, and federal regulations.
Respond to insurance company inquiries and requests for documentation related to fire service coverage.
- Maintain accurate rosters, training logs, and department records.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.

Knowledge of laws, ordinances, codes, and regulations.
Ability to work independently with high accuracy and attention to detail.

Certifications
IFSAC or Pro Board certifications and NWCG. Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, Hazmat Awareness, Hazmat Operations, Instructor 1 NWCG Wildland Firefighter 2.

Within 2 years needs to obtain the following certifications: Hazmat Technician, Driver Operator-Pumper, NWCG Wildland Firefighter 1 and NWCG ICT5. Attend the NWCG course L-280, Followership to Leadership.&nb

Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
Working Environment
- Working conditions may vary. Work in office, vehicle, fire bay, and outdoor settings.
- Work can be hazardous at times, especially when working with heavy equipment and in prolonged heat, cold, or inclement weather.
- Essential functions require maintaining good physical condition necessary for running, walking, crawling, climbing, stooping, and heavy lifting (up to 150 pounds) while wearing heavy protective equipment in a hazardous environment.
- Must meet current physical condition requirements on the date of appointment and maintain them thereafter, as required by standard operating procedures.
