The City of Charlottesville is seeking qualified candidates to join our Public Works Department – Public Service Division as a Maintenance Worker III. This position will be part of a dedicated 5-member Concrete Crew responsible for supporting Capital Improvement Projects related to sidewalk repair and construction throughout the City. Under the direction of a Maintenance Crew Supervisor II the selected candidate will assist in performing skilled and semi-skilled labor in the installation, maintenance, and repair of sidewalks and related infrastructure.
The anticipated work schedule for this position is as follows (subject to change due to operational needs):
- Monday - Friday : 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM
A Maintenance Worker III performs semi-skilled work in a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction assignments, safely using specialized tools and operating equipment to complete assigned work. Work is performed under the general supervision of and reports to a Maintenance Crew Supervisor II.
As of March 28, 2024, this position is part of the Labor and Trades bargaining unit, as defined by the City’s Collective Bargaining Ordinance (Ordinance No. 22-128). Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity.
The hiring amount for this position is between $20.45 - $25.14 an hour ($42,536.00 - $52,291.20 Annually). - The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met.
Education and Experience: Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.
- High school diploma or GED AND at least 1 year of related experience in maintenance, repair, and/or construction activities to which assigned. (Relevant experience may include tasks such as forming, pouring, and finishing concrete; setting grades; working with curb, gutter, or sidewalk infrastructure; or operating tools and equipment commonly used in street and sidewalk construction.)
OR
- 3 or more years of related experience in maintenance, repair, and/or construction activities to which assigned.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:
- Subject to emergency and stand-by call and must respond within minimum response time to the City facility based on Departmental guidelines.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license and acceptable driving record according to city criteria.
- Must obtain and maintain a Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement within 6 months of employment.
- Must obtain and maintain a Work Zone Traffic Control (WZTC) Safety-Basic level certification.
- Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check, pre-employment physical, and pre-employment drug-screening.
- Position is subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.
- Must obtain and maintain all certifications required by applicable federal, state and local regulations.
