Position/Job Title: Librarian or Library Director
Job Description: Performs administrative work involved in planning and directing all library services and activities of the City Library. Supervises all staff members assigned to the City Library. Supervision is received from the City Manager.
Essential Functions:
- Provides excellent customer service.
- Exhibits excellent managerial, leadership, organizational, customer and public relations, personnel management, and budgetary skills.
- Supervises the selection, training, and performance of library staff.
- Promotes the City Library, its collection, and services.
Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Computer skills using Windows, Microsoft Office applications, Internet, Adobe Acrobat Microsoft Outlook.
Ability to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of management skills.
- Plan and direct the work of library staff in various professional, technical, and clerical functions of library service.
- Demonstrate ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion in establishing and maintain good relationships with the officials, boards, groups, and other agencies within the community.
- Demonstrate ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with the City Manager, City Council, and staff.
- Demonstrate skill in identifying the needs of the community and library patrons.
Physical Demands:
- Standing: To work at the main desk; several hours at a time.
- Sitting: To enter computer data; alternating with walking and standing.
- Lifting/carrying: Frequent: Books 10 to 15 pounds; occasional: boxes of donated book (etc) unknown weight; boxes of books to be mailed; printer paper or card stock weighing 15-18 pounds.
- Pushing/Pulling: To push and pull carts of books up to 30 pounds of exertion.
- Handling: Most aspects of the work require frequent handling of books and papers.
- Reaching: Constant to work at desk; overhead and arms length forward reach; reaching overhead to shelve or retrieve books from shelves; reaching forward and overhead to post notices on bulletin board or displays.
- Vision: Required for most aspects of the job.
- Walking: On carpet; frequent walking from shelving areas to front desk- 50 feet.
- Fine Dexterity: to use computer; load printer and copier with paper; do paperwork.
- Hearing/Talking: To communicate with the general public and co-workers; answer telephone.
- Bending: At the desk to reach items on the side or in front of computer, etc.; to shelve books and periodicals materials and supplies on lower shelves.
- Climbing/Balancing: To shelve books on higher shelves, step stool provided. As directed on rare occasions to climb 2 flights of stairs to the Children’s Library area.
- Kneeling/crouching: Occasional-frequent to pick up books off the floor, from the back book drop; shelve or retrieve books on lower shelves; load printer.
Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aides:
- Computer terminal, telephone, typewriter, printer, wand, book truck, dumbwaiter, microfilm reader, microfiche reader, copier.
Environmental Factors:
- The Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library is a smoke-free environment.
- Respiratory hazards: Book dust.
Protective Equipment Required: None.
Non-Physical Demands:
- Frequently changing tasks, working closely with others as part of a team; occasionally performing multiple tasks simultaneously, occasionally noisy/distracting environment
Qualifications Required:
- Education - Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science, Business Administration, or any related field Preferred.
- Experience – 3-years’ experience in library setting plus at least two years of Supervisory responsibility. Additional training, education, and experience in related to library sciences and supervisory role may be substituted for educational requirements.
