The Sioux City Art Center is seeking a dynamic and creative individual to serve as its first Design and Communications Coordinator. This full-time position works collaboratively with Art Center staff to develop and share compelling stories about exhibitions, classes, programs, and events through high-quality printed and digital communications.
Primary responsibilities include:
Graphic design for all Art Center printed and digital materials
Hands-on design and fabrication of exhibition labels, text panels, and vinyl lettering
Oversight and ongoing management of the Art Centers website and social media platforms
Creation and distribution of press releases, email communications, and public announcements
Photo and video documentation of exhibitions, programs, and events
As a City employee, the Design and Communications Coordinator will also have opportunities to support communications and design efforts across City government, including branding, social media content, and related creative projects through City Hall.

Branding, Graphic Design, and Publications:
- Oversees the Art Center’s branding and ensures consistent application across all communications.
- Designs and produces digital and printed materials including brochures, newsletters, posters, signage, exhibition labels, and program guides.
- Prepares files for print production, including layout, labeling, and mailing preparation.
- Coordinates with external printing and mailing vendors for production and distribution.
- Maintains organized archives or images, design assets, templates, and publications files.
Website and Digital Media:
- Oversees the content, navigation, and design of the Art Center’s website, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and visual consistency.,
- Updates event, program, and exhibition information in coordination with relevant staff.
- Produces digital slideshows, graphics, and promotional content for on-site screens and external platforms.
Social Media and Public Communications:
- Manages scheduling, creating, and posting of all social media content across platforms.
- Writes and edits copy for press releases, promotional announcements, email marketing, and other communications materials.
- Collaborates with program, education, and curatorial staff to ensure accurate and engaging content.
Photography, Videography, and Documentation:
- Attends Art Center events, classes, and exhibitions to document activities through photography and video.
- Maintains organized digital photo and video archives.
- Coordinates publicity photos and ensures images are available for marketing, media, and archival use.
Signage and Exhibition Support:
- Designs and prepare interior signage, exhibition labels and wayfinding materials.
- Designs exterior signage and work with vendors to fabricate and install signage.
- Prepares and updates exhibition calendars for entrance signs and digital lobby displays.
- Assists curatorial and registrar staff with inventory of the permanent collection and condition reports for temporary exhibitions as needed.
- May assist with exhibition installations.
- Assist with front desk duties and opening and closing of the Art Center when needed.
- Attends and participates in community and professional meetings, representing the Art Center.
- Operates a City vehicle to pick up supplies or donations for events.
- Maintains regular and punctual attendance and working hours.
- Performs related work as required.
- Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency. In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.

Job Knowledge: Good knowledge of commercial printing; ability to use IBM computer software (Aldus Page Maker Program) to complete graphic layouts and other related responsibilities; knowledge and ability to handle works of art properly; ability to type, file and maintain proper records; ability to understand and use 35mm camera; good knowledge of research techniques and of the sources and availability of information; knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods, this includes alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media; knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, and rules of composition and grammar; knowledge of principles and methods for showing, promoting, and selling products or services.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to customers (external and internal); ability to write and speak clearly, distinctly and effectively with fellow employees and patrons; read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; ability to provide and follow verbal and written instructions; ability to maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
Physical Requirements: Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer); ability to see details at a distance; regularly lifts up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 30 pounds.
Work Environment: Work is normally performed in a normal inside office environment with appropriate heating and cooling and is not subject to significant occupational or environmental hazards other than those normally associated with general public contact, dust or odors.Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree in a related field and two (2) years of full-time work experience in graphic design, marketing, communications, or digital media;

Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skill and abilities.
PREFERRED:Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Marketing, Communications, Arts Administration or closely related field.
