The City of Ramsey is seeking a skilled and motivated Engineering Technician II to support the application of civil engineering principles related to the City’s public infrastructure. This position plays a vital role in supporting environmental, sewer, stormwater, street, and water systems that serve a growing community.
The Engineering Technician II performs a variety of technical civil engineering tasks, including construction inspection, AutoCAD drafting, GIS and mapping support, materials testing coordination, surveying assistance, and plan and permit review. The position also assists with maintaining engineering and infrastructure records, preparing as-built plans, and responding to public service requests from residents, contractors, and developers. The role involves a mix of field and office work and may include assistance with winter operations as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
• Inspect public works construction projects (streets, sewer, water, and stormwater) to ensure compliance with City standards and specifications.
• Coordinate construction materials testing and report results to engineering staff.
• Assist with surveying, data collection, and field documentation.
• Support drafting, design, and cost computations for public works projects.
• Maintain and update infrastructure maps, GIS data, and engineering records.
• Prepare reports, field notes, and as-built plans for public infrastructure systems.
• Review plans and specifications for conformance with City design standards.
• Respond to public inquiries and service requests in a timely and professional manner.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Knowledge of civil engineering principles, methods, and practices in a municipal setting.
• Skill in reading and interpreting engineering plans and specifications.
• Ability to use standard computer software, including CAD and GIS applications.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills for field documentation and recordkeeping.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid Minnesota driver’s license in good standing.
• Graduate of a vocational/technical college in engineering technology, civil engineering, or a closely related field.
• Two (2) years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Two (2) years of related work experience using AutoCAD, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Must have, or be able to obtain within one (1) year of hire, State of Minnesota construction inspection certifications and SWPPP design certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field.
• Experience in construction inspection, surveying, or municipal engineering.
• Knowledge of municipal engineering standards and practices.
• Experience working in a municipal government setting.

This full-time, non-exempt position includes a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, life, and disability insurance, vacation and sick leave, holiday pay, and participation in the PERA pension plan. Typical hours are Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
