The Sr. Legislative Assistant provides high-level support to legislators by researching and analyzing legislative
issues, drafting policy proposals, and managing communications.
HIRING SALARY RANGE: $76,315 - $99,964 (Estimated Annual Salary)

- Performs all of the responsibilities of a Legislative Assistant I when appropriate or assigned.
- Assists with budget preparation.
- Facilitates various meetings for the Legislators.
- Inventories office supplies.
- Assists with maintaining the appointment book for boards and commissions of the delegation.
- Assists with notifying incumbents of expiring board appointments.
- Posts meeting notices and board vacancies on the Legislative Delegation webpage.
- Answers department telephone calls.
- Receives and greets department visitors and provides information to or refers callers and visitors to other appropriate departments or County personnel.
- Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
- Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Law, Public Policy, or a related field of study.
- Minimum of two (2) years or more of experience as a Legislative Assistant or six years of related professional experience.
- Must possess a valid SC Drivers license (or obtain within three (3) months of hire) and meet the requirements of the County’s motor vehicle policy.
- At least one (1) year of experience working with elected officials or local government experience preferred.

Physical Requirements
- Able to function productively in a standard office environment accessing cabinets, shelving, work areas, warehouse and office equipment.
- Able to lift, carry, push and pull up to fifteen (15) pounds occasionally.
- Able to sit or stand for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as on computer screen(s).
- Able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (electronically and handwritten) in English.
Working Conditions
- Climate controlled office with hazards typical to that environment.
- Position may require travel within and outside of the County which imposes common travel hazards.
- Standard work hours would be Monday – Friday between the hours of 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
- May be designated to report to work during hazardous weather and other emergency conditions.
- All employees of Charleston County Government must reside in South Carolina.
