Job Description
PURPOSE SUMMARY. Provide routine maintenance and support for water and wastewater services in rural areas, including operation and upkeep of water/wastewater treatment plants, distribution and collections systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES.
1. Maintenance and Operations
Perform routine maintenance on water/wastewater treatment systems including collection and distribution systems.
Operate pumps, valves, and other processing equipment to move wastewater through treatment processes.
Assists in installing, repairing, and maintaining water mains, service lines, valves, hydrants, manholes, and sewer lines.
Inject chemicals into the sewer system as required.
Interpret meters and gauges to ensure equipment and processes operate within established parameters.
Operates light equipment and tools under supervision to ensure the efficient operation of the utility system.
Maintain buildings, grounds, and related facilities.
2. Equipment Operation
Operate motor vehicles, compact tractors, front-end loaders, and other light equipment as needed.
Drive trucks or other vehicles to support department operations.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES. Other duties as assigned. Position requires availability for responding to emergency situations on a 24-hour basis.
QUALIFICATIONS.
A. Education. High school diploma or equivalent.
B. Experience. A minimum of six (6) months of experience in water and/or wastewater maintenance, utility operations, construction, repair or installation of water or wastewater lines, plumbing, or a closely related field.
C. Education/Experience substitution. In accordance with County Policy.
D. Licenses/Certifications. Valid driver’s license. Must maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with County policy.
E. Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, driver’s license record, etc.). Must pass pre-employment background check and driving record check.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
Knowledge of:
Equipment, materials, methods, and practices used in the water utilities trade.
Safety practices and regulations related to wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal systems.
Operational procedures for pumps, valves, and other wastewater processing equipment.
Standard maintenance techniques for buildings, grounds, and utilities systems.
Skill in:
Driving and operating a backhoe, crane, bobcat, and utility truck.
Flushing sewer lines and cleaning lift stations.
Using general tools and equipment related to the water utilities trade.
Following technical manuals and completing minor repairs.
Learn to locate underground utilities and read simple utility maps or plans.
Safely operate tools and light equipment
Ability to:
Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
Follow written and oral instructions and work independently.
Read and interpret service manuals and technical documents.
Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others.
Respond to emergency situations and perform tasks under pressure.
Compensation Range
$15.15 - $20.41
