This posting will be used to fill a Fulltime, Permanent, Safety-Sensitive Animal Care Supervisor within the Department of Animal Serviices for Anne Arundel County Government.
It is responsible for supervising the kennel operations or field services in the Animal Services Department for Anne Arundel County Government.

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK
Work involves supervising and participating in the activities of animal care attendants and technicians ito provide all aspects of daily care to animals in the shelter. Work is performed within established laws and regulations, and is reviewed by the Department of Animal Services Deputy Director.
Work is performed primarily at the County’s Animal Services facility. Due to the nature of shelter work, may be exposed to deceased, fractious, or aggressive animals; hostile, irate persons; zoonotic or other diseases; unpleasant noises, odors, sights; extreme temperatures.
The Animal Care Supervisor is responsible for supervising the following kennel functions in the Animal Services Department.
Manages Kennel Operations – Manages the daily functions of kennel operations. Oversees the discipline, evaluation, training and scheduling of Animal Care Attendants and Animal Care Technicians. Works alongside other department leadership to resolve conflicts, problem solve operations issues and maintain a quality customer-service environment. Recommends, establishes and manages policies and procedures which promote quality work standards and performance.
Facility Maintenance, Inventory and Equipment – Maintains a quality standard of cleanliness and maintenance in the facility to minimize the occurrence and spread of animal diseases. Addresses deterioration or safety risks and ensures proper care of facilities and equipment. Responsible for maintaining an inventory of animal care and medical supplies. Coordinates with County and 3rd party maintenance workers for facility maintenance and repairs.
Animal Care – Provides daily monitoring of all animals maintained at the facility via visual observation and thorough documentation. Ensures that animals receive appropriate food, water, enrichment and housing in relation to their species as well as receive appropriate medical treatment as determined by the staff veterinarian.
Animal Population Management – Works closely with the Deputy Director to monitor the daily population levels. Ensure animals are on the correct outcome pathway, focusing on reducing length of stay and increasing live outcomes. Works with Behavior and Rescue Coordinator to explore rescue placement options. Participate in discussions and decision process regarding euthanasia decisions, and ensure all euthanasia is performed in accordance with local laws and regulations.
Documentation – Maintains animal population software, ensuring check-in procedures are consistent, observations recorded correctly and animal statuses kept current.
Works with other Department leaders to ensure all information is properly documented as it becomes available.(Note: The duties and responsibilities enumerated in this class specification are for the purpose of determining a common set of minimum qualifications and salary level for all positions in this class. Act as Lead supervisor in relation to Emergency Response/Operations and Emergency Operations Center Representatives.
Ensures humane handling of animals. Monitors spay/neuter clinic and euthanasia program, and ensures compliance within established laws and regulations.
Prepares periodic and special projects. Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the care and characteristics of domestic animals.
Considerable knowledge of laws and ordinances governing animal protection and control.
Knowledge of hazards and safety practices involved in animal control and animal sheltering.
Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of others.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.
Ability to express ideas clearly, orally and in writing.
Graduation from high school; two (2) or more years of experience in animal control work; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.
NOTE: This position is safety-sensitive and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol testing.
NOTE: The selection process includes a comprehensive background investigation.
NOTE: This is a Monday through Friday position with work on evenings and weekends as needed.
NOTE: This position has on-call responsibilities and is compensated separately for on-call.
Preference will be given to applicants with the following:
1. ) Certification in human euthanasia.
2.) Customer relations experience.
3.) Three (3) or more years of supervisory experience.
4. ) Ability to work Monday - Friday positoin with work on evenings and weekend as needed.
5.) College course work in animal sciences, animal behavior.
