Position: Fire Chief
- Full Salary Range** - $80,9015 - $121,373 depending on qualifications.
The Town of Franklin is accepting applications for a full-time Fire Chief.The chief performs specialized technical work overseeing the administration and operations of the Fire Department.
The chief is responsible for planning, directing and coordinating the Town's fire protection program. Work generally requires the employee to oversee and participate in fire prevention, fire suppression and emergency response of paid and volunteer staff, as well as administrative duties for the department. Work is conducted in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and standards; federal and state fire, building and mechanical codes, laws and regulations; local ordinances and departmental policies and procedures. The position will be responsible for leading a combination department comprised of 27 volunteers and 9 full-time firefighters. The chief reports directly to the Town Manager.
- Recruitment and Selection guidelines**:
- Thorough knowledge of standard fire prevention codes, NFPA standards and federal, state, county and departmental standards, rules, and regulations.
- Thorough knowledge of techniques for handling hazardous materials.
- Ability to act with sound judgment in routine and emergency situations.
- Thorough knowledge of departmental budgeting practices.
- Thorough knowledge of departmental budgeting practices, and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Needs to be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town officials, employees, volunteers, business owners, homeowners, children in schools and the general public.
- Residency within the Town is not required, but residency should be close enough to the Town to respond adequately when needed.
- Desirable education and experience**:
- Graduation from High School and 10+ years of experience in fire prevention, suppression, investigation or related area and administrative experience;
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Preference for a college degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, or a related field.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina Class B driver's license and a Fire Inspector, Fire Officer, Fire Investigations, and emergency medical certification at the level specified by the Town are required.
