Description
Plans, coordinates and supervises the operations and maintenance of parks and recreation resources including grounds, facilities, equipment and recreation programs and services in an assigned geographic district; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Classes in the Parks and Recreation District Supervisor Series are distinguished by their responsibility for planning, coordinating and supervising the operation and maintenance of parks and recreation resources in an assigned geographic district.
Grade III: This level is distinguished by its responsibility for planning, coordinating and supervising the operations and maintenance of parks and recreation resources in a large and complex district.
Examples of Duties

Plans, supervises and coordinates parks and recreation operations and maintenance functions in an assigned geographic district; reviews, evaluates and analyzes programs and services; reviews organization and staffing requirements and recommends changes; supervises activities in promoting usage of parks and recreational facilities; supervises programs to control vandalism and enforcement of rules and regulations governing use of parks and recreation facilities and equipment; supervises the maintenance, beautification and improvement of parks and playgrounds; supervises and coordinates the operation of recreational programs and services; develops program plans and schedule of activities and supervises the implementation and evaluation of the programs and activities; conducts program publicity and promotion of district activities and services; prepares budget estimates for district operations to be integrated into a comprehensive departmental budget; initiates requisitions for the expenditure of funds for the purchase of services, equipment, materials and supplies; attends staff meetings to discuss and resolve intra-departmental problems; represents the department at meetings and conferences with government officials, private individuals, civic and community organizations in the district; maintains effective relations with the general public, community groups and organizations; prepares a variety of reports and correspondence; supervises safety practices.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in recreation, physical education, public administration or a related field and for:
Grade III: Four (4) years of professional level experience in planning, organizing and supervising recreational and/or park development activities.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Type 3).
Knowledge of: the principles, practices, tools and techniques of recreation; playground administration and operation; standards and requirements of parks and recreational facilities and programs; principles and practices of supervision; public relations; occupational hazards and safety practices.
Ability to: plan, supervise and coordinate various functions of parks and recreation programs; evaluate operations and activities; prepare and justify budget estimates; initiate and maintain effective relationship with the public; give clear and concise oral and written instructions; prepare reports and correspondence.

Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.

Temporary Positions
Employees appointed to temporary positions may also gain membership in the civil service upon satisfactory completion of an initial probation period of at least six months.
