DEFINITION: This position is responsible for participating in the operations of the Communications Center.
REPORTS TO: The Communications Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions.
NOTE: This posting is applicable for the recruitment of the Public Safety Telecommunicator position. The incumbent (s) for this position can be hired in any of the following as either as Level I, II, III, or Senior telecommunicator. Compacity based on the needs and requirements of the Police department, as well as the experience and qualification of candidates.

PAY RANGE
Telecommunicator I: $22.82-$34.23
Telecommunicator II: $23.96-$35.94
Telecommunicator III:$25.16-$37.74
Senior Telecommunicator: $26.42-$39.62
- Receives emergency and non-emergency calls.
- Dispatches police and fire emergency and non-emergency calls for service to appropriate agencies.
- Transfers call to appropriate parties and take messages.
- Communicates with field units via two-way radio and mobile data terminals.
- Receives and transmits information using a Computer Aided Dispatch System and Emergency 911 System.
- Monitors transmissions as required.
- Operates the DCI/NCIC terminal.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Responsible for transportation to and from work, including night and weekend hours.
- All Communications employees are on call during inclement weather conditions.
• Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly
associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major
duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an
apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain DCI/NCIC certification.
Telecommunicator II - 2yrs experience with an additional 40 training hours
Telecommunicator III - 4yrs experience with an additional 80 training hours
Sr. Telecommunicator - 6 yrs experience with an additional 120 training hours

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Communications Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include local, state, and federal laws; City ordinances; City administrative and personnel policies; Police Department General Orders; and department policy memoranda. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related emergency communications and dispatch duties. Strict regulations and the diversity of tasks to be performed contribute to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to participate in the operations of the Communications Center. Success in this position contributes to the effective response to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with other City staff, private citizens, and telecommunications representatives from other municipal and county organizations.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office.
