DEFINITION
To perform responsible professional work in organizing, implementing and managing a well-rounded fitness/wellness related recreation program; and to efficiently manage our comprehensive Recreation and Fitness Center inclusive of maintenance and operations. To assist Recreation Superintendent and Special Services Superintendent in planning and facilitating a variety of programs.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Office Coordinator. May receive functional supervision from other management staff.
May exercise direct supervision over subordinate Recreation Fitness Center Staff, Contract Instructors and Volunteers.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Serve as first point of contact for the department and staffs the front reception area. Greets and assists visitors and callers with memberships, reservations, registrations, events, and programs.
- Train and supervise subordinate Recreation and Fitness Center Staff.
- Development of and advertising of comprehensive fitness/wellness related programs.
- Assist in the development of fitness/wellness informational brochures and department publications.
- Develop and monitor annual, monthly, weekly, and daily maintenance schedules for the Recreation and Fitness Center inclusive of mechanical and equipment operations.
- Assess community needs and develop a fitness/wellness program of activities.
- Maintains cash bank, daily cash, and daily revenue report.
- Inputs and maintains registration and reservation information in recreation management software.
- Participate in meetings to discuss and evaluate program techniques and content.
- Recommend changes in staffing, hours of operation, program objectives, policies, and procedures to assure maximum effectiveness and efficiency of Recreation and Fitness Center.
- Type and proofread a variety of reports, letters, memos and statistical charts.
- Independently compose correspondence related to responsibilities assigned.
- Respond to complaints and requests for information on regulations, procedures, systems and precedents relating to responsibilities assigned.
- Research, compile and analyze data for special projects, collect and assemble data and background materials for a variety of reports.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
For indefinite periods of time - mobility within an office and field environment; exposure to fume, odors, dust, mites, radiation, explosive, mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards; exposure to constant noise; writing; walking; typing; twisting body; stooping; standing; squatting; sorting; sitting; seeing; running; pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying up to 30-50 pounds; kneeling; filing; cleaning; reading; decision making; reaching above shoulder level; using both hands for simple and firm grasping; clarity of hearing; communicating clearly and effectively, in person, by two-way radio, and by telephone; fine finger manipulation; operation of specific equipment at Fitness Center, small hand tools, personal computer, and calculator; operating a motor vehicle through city traffic.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Techniques of supervising recreation/fitness activities.
- General knowledge of sports and sports injury treatment/prevention.
- Gymnasium, Cardio-Vascular, Weight Room, Aerobics, Racquetball/Handball, Swimming Pool, Sauna, Whirlpool, and Steam Room operations from the standpoint of safety.
- Procedures for implementing a variety of fitness/wellness activities and programs through community participation.
- Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
- Advertising and marketing methods commonly used in fitness and wellness operations.
- Principles and practices of supervision and training.
- English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Organization, procedures, and operating details of the City department to which assigned.
- Record keeping principles and procedures.
- Microsoft Office Software
- CivicRec – recreation management software
Ability to:
- Train and supervise subordinate staff.
- Plan, organize, implement, and evaluate fitness/wellness programs and activities.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Identify methods to maximize service effectiveness and efficiency.
- Work outdoors, lift and carry load equivalent of 30-50 lbs and maintain good physical condition.
- Attend conferences and workshops related to the recreation and fitness/wellness profession.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with public groups, agencies, school officials, the media and others contacted in the course of work.
- Prepare and distribute publicity concerning new and on-going programs and activities.
- Operate standard office computer system, calculator and fax machine.
- Learn department policies, procedures, organization and operating details.
- Type at a speed necessary for adequate job performance. Operate a personal computer.
- Work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Compile and maintain complex and extensive records and prepare reports.
- Analyze situations carefully and adopt effective courses of action.
- Understand the organization and operation of the City and of outside agencies as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.
- Understand community needs in a variety of fitness/wellness areas and evaluate activities according to those needs.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Experience in recreation/sports, public relations, managing and directing recreational activities and sports tournaments, operations involving recreation or fitness/wellness center programs and activities inclusive of planning, implementing and evaluating is desirable.
- One year of clerical experience, supplemented by specialized clerical courses preferred.
- A high school diploma or GED is required.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within three months an Emergency First Aid and a valid C.P.R. Certification.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within six months (when required) Red Cross Pool Lifeguard Certification, Weight Training Certification, and Fitness Assessment Certification.
