Under the direction of the Director of Information Technology, is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of all City Hall, Public Works, Water & Sewer, Fire, & Police networks, information systems, computers, and devices. The Information Technology Technician is expected to use a combination of technical and soft skills to support day-to-day and long-term goals of the City of Freeport and the Information Technology Department.
- Complete Tier 1 help desk support tickets. Advanced support tickets will be triaged and escalated to the Deputy Information Technology Director and the Information Technology Director.
- Support users and troubleshoot issues with Windows desktops, servers, networks, and mobile devices.
- Use effective communication skills to communicate with users and the IT team.
- Accurately and diligently perform documentation.
- Support and maintain security and door access systems, telephone systems, and video systems.
- Occasionally collect field data for the public utility using GPS and GIS systems.
- Adhere to a strict IT code of ethics.
- Will occasionally need to work evening or weekend hours for service updates or emergencies.
- Ability to learn new systems and procedures, problem solve and work independently.

- Associate’s degree in computer science or related field,
- Two years plus experience in workstation support (Help Desk), network and information systems administration, or a combination of both.
- GIS experience and/or municipal government experience a plus.
- Proficiency with computer systems, various software programs, and standard office applications.
- Ability to learn new systems and procedures, as well as problem solve.
- Strong analytical and technical report-writing skills.
- Effective communication, conflict resolution, and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and collaborate across departments.
- A+, Network+, Security+ Certification or equivalent within 1 year of employment.
- Pass CJIS background check in addition to normal background check.
- Valid Illinois driver’s license and good driving record.
Starting range for this position is $21.00 to $24.00/hour DOQ. This position comes with an excellent benefit package that includes health, dental, vision, & life insurance, paid time off, plus an IMRF pension.
