Position Summary
The City of Rockdale is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Accountant to manage and oversee municipal financial operations. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing reports, supporting budgeting processes, and ensuring compliance with applicable governmental accounting standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and maintain general ledger accounts and financial records
- Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual account reconciliations
- Assist in the preparation of the City’s annual budget
- Generate financial reports, statements, and analysis for management and City Council
- Ensure compliance with governmental accounting standards (e.g., GASB)
- Manage and monitor revenues, expenditures, and fund balances
- Prepare and post journal entries
- Assist with year-end closing and external audits
- Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules
- Support grant accounting and reporting requirements
- Review internal controls and recommend improvements
- Provide support and guidance to accounting clerical staff
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting and at least two years of municipal experience required. Or associate's degree and at least 5 years' experience in municipality. (Outstanding applicants may be considered for any combination of education/experience)
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software systems
- Ability to analyze financial data and prepare accurate reports
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in governmental or municipal accounting is highly preferred
- Knowledge of fund accounting and GASB standards
- CPA or progress toward CPA certification
- Experience with municipal financial systems
Work Environment
- Office setting within City Hall
- Standard business hours, Monday through Friday
- Occasional extended hours during budget preparation and audits
