General Position Summary:
The Washougal Public Works Department is a multi-functional agency providing a variety of maintenance, infrastructure and general services to the residents and business establishments of the community.
Successful applicants will be assigned to one of our core service departments; stormwater, streets, mechanical shop or maintenance functions that include oversight for buildings and parks.
This position will be hired via a temporary placement service and will be subject to a background check and pre-employment drug screening.
Essential Functions:
Perform general grounds maintenance duties including preparation of walking trails and fields at assigned city and park sites, or basic maintenance tasks in city right-of-way including vegetation control, asphalt, concrete, gravel, and drainage repairs. Provide support for special events. May perform duties of similar complexity in other maintenance areas as required or assigned.
Because of the small size of the city staff, each staff member is expected to perform a wide range of field duties as may be required from time to time.
Work is normally performed in field locations utilizing a variety of power operated tools and equipment and hand tools such as weed eaters, mowers, tiller, sod cutter, pressure washer, power edger, power blower, pruners, drills, hammers, screwdrivers, saws, chain saw, pickup trucks/cars, tractors and field groomer, shovels, rakes and picks.
Work under the supervision of the Field Supervisor. Technical and field leadership provided by the Lead Maintenance Workers. Individuals will be expected to work independently to perform relatively routine and well-known tasks; or more difficult work following specific direction.
Specific Job Skills:
Ability to follow oral and written instruction.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the general public.
Learn general principles of landscape and walking trail and field maintenance, including turf, shrubs and trees commonly used in park landscaping.
Learn general principles of right-of-way maintenance including concrete, asphalt, drainage repairs and vegetation control.
Identify work hazards and practice general safety procedures.
Ability to work varying schedules.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires physical strength and ability sufficient to perform manual labor for extended periods under dirty and uncomfortable situations and in all types of weather conditions.
Requires continuous physical effort including frequent bending, walking, climbing and manipulation and lifting of heavy city equipment.
Lift up to 50 pounds and perform a variety of physical tasks and heavy labor.
Requires visual and hearing acuity and manual dexterity.
Education and Experience:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Currently attending or graduated with high school diploma or equivalent.
Recommended to have a valid Washington or Oregon state driving license and good driving record is required.
