Starting Hiring Range: $33,330.34 - $40,829.66, annuallyThe purpose of this position is to assist in the daily operations of the Animal Services facility by providing exemplary customer service, maintaining a clean and safe facility, and assisting with animal services.
- Assist residents with the placement of animals.
- Maintain inventory of animals and supplies.
- Perform light office work including: answering phone, taking messages and complaints.
- Take lost/found reports and call owners about lost/found animals.
- Responsible for setting, servicing and picking up animal traps.
- Check humane traps and call residents about overdue traps.
- Fill out release agreements and adoption contracts.
- Check-in owner surrenders, resident drop-offs, and euthanasia drop offs.
- Retrieve owner redemptions.
- Fill out and process out impoundment cards.
- Help maintain shelter: clean kennels, clean cat rooms, wash dishes, and mop floors.
- Provide care to shelter animals by feeding, watering, exercising, providing socialization and evaluation of animals. Give vaccinations to animals and assist with euthanasia of animals, when needed.
- Assist residents with dead animal drop offs.
- Responsible for regular attendance and arriving to work on time.
- All other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED equivalent, is required.
- Basic customer service skills.
- Good working knowledge of computer operations and general office procedures.
- Knowledge of city and departmental practices, procedures, systems, and federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes, ordinances, and best practices relating to animal services.
- Knowledge of domestic and wild animal handling techniques, as well as knowledge of animal behavior and diseases.
- Ability to regularly interact with others and exchange and receive of information, providing effective and tactful customer service, and work independently with a high level of discretion.
- Skill to work with minimal supervision, follow both oral and written instructions.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with the general public and other employees.
- Ability to interact with people in a professional and congenial manner.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to maintain log sheets, messages, and lost and found reports.
- Ability to be punctual and attend work regularly.
Special Requirements
Ability to work flexible hours or schedules as required to include nights, weekends, and on-call.
Mobility within an office and field environment is required.
This position is classified as a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.
Licenses & Certifications
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record as established by the City of Midlothian driving standards.
Euthanasia certification is preferred.
Work Environment
Work is mostly indoors, but may occasionally require duties in an outdoor environment. Exposure to and use of disinfection and hazardous chemicals in cleaning and euthanasia. Exposed to confined animals that may have diseases. Exposed to adverse environmental conditions and other elements including, but not limited to, fumes, dust/mites, noxious odors, chemicals, solid waste substances, animals, animal waste, animal hair, animal dander, urine, saliva, and blood. Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
