Person County Government is seeking a professional and customer-focused individual to join the Tax Office as a Tax Customer Service Representative. This position plays a vital role in supporting the collection of taxes and maintaining accurate tax records while delivering high-quality service to the public.
The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, dependable, and capable of working both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
This role is responsible for performing a variety of clerical, administrative, and customer service functions related to tax billing, collections, and record maintenance. The position requires frequent interaction with the public, providing assistance, answering questions, and resolving issues in a courteous and professional manner.

The starting salary will be determined with consideration given to both the candidate's educational background and relevant work experience.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record per County policy.
This is a non-exempt position working 37.5 hours weekly/1950 hours annually.

Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.- Attends to the public, provides information regarding departmental operations and answers questions on programs, procedures, laws and regulations; handles telephone inquiries and correspondence; provides information on tax parcel numbers, deed numbers, tax values, amounts due, assisting with use of GIS, and related matters.
- Collects current and delinquent taxes; figures discounts, penalties, and interest; posts payments to computer system; prepares and issues receipts.
- Processes tax payments received by mail; notifies taxpayer by mail or phone of discrepancies.
- Balances collections with records daily.
- Processes credit card payments: balances credit card payments and notifies taxpayers by mail or telephone of discrepancies.
- Assists lawyers, real estate agents, and others in searching tax records, maps, and other documents; makes copies.
- Answers public's questions on property valuations, tax bills, and other records.
- Prepares a variety of reports on taxes, refunds, releases, and others requested by supervisors.
- Makes copies of forms, records, and other information, as requested.
- Prepares and mails delinquent notices for real property taxes and vehicle taxes.
- Collects motor vehicle taxes and delinquent fees.
- Assists in updating records using skip trace services.
- Initiates phone calls to delinquent taxpayers.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- High School Graduation or GED equivalent and supplemented by specialized tax assessment training.
- One (1) year of cash handling or related experience an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
