The Animal Services Division serves the community by providing a wide range of animal related services. Animal Control is responsible for enforcing laws and ordinances related to the treatment and control of animals in the communities that we service. The division’s staff of office assistants, animal care workers and animal control officers are committed to promote and ensure public health and safety, facilitate responsible pet ownership, humanely and responsibly care for the animals in our care and facilitate effective placement, provide prompt and courteous service to our customers, and provide education and positive enforcement efforts that will engage community members. THE POSITIONThis position generally works independently under general supervision of the Animal Services Manager. The selected candidate will be responsible for a variety of animal control and shelter operation functions which includes animal regulations and ordinance enforcement, reunification of lost missing pets, capture and release of wild animals, animal care and adoption, licensing compliance, barking nuisance calls, and related duties. This position will coordinate and work collaboratively with the other Animal Control Officers in the division. Other responsibilities include investigations, report writing, public relation activities and public assistance. The Animal Control Officer is expected to work shifts which include nights, weekends, holidays and will be on call during off-duty hours for emergency situations.IDEAL CANDIDATEThe ideal candidate will be a self-starter with the ability to work independently, analyze situations and exercise sound judgement while staying in communication with their supervisor. This position requires a great deal of proactive thinking, problem solving, organization, effective communication, and safety awareness. The ideal candidate will be a team player that pays attention to detail and have the ability to develop a thorough understanding of City policies and processes.EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skill and ability is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skill and abilities would be:
- Two (2) years experience in the care or handling of animals or other related work experience with public contact involving enforcement of established rules and regulations.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of a valid or ability to obtain a valid California driver's license by time of appointment.
- Completion of the California Animal Control Directors Association (CACDA) Euthanasia Training within one year of appointment.
- PC 832 certificate must be obtained within one year from appointment.
