Job Responsibilities
A natural retreat in the Lowcountry woods, Givhans Ferry State Park sits at the end of the 23-mile long stretch of Edisto River kayaking paradise known as the Edisto River Canoe and Kayak trail that begins at Colleton State Park.
The Edisto is the longest free-flowing, blackwater river in North America, and glimpses of it can be seen from the bluffs outside the rustic, Givhans Ferry State Park cabins, as well as from the back porch of the River House, the park welcome center. A shaded campground, nature trail and picnic shelters are also available at the park.
Job Purpose And Duties
Under general supervision, assists with overall operation and maintenance of a State Park. Performs diversified duties as governed by general instruction, policies and standard operating procedures of the Department. Assumes the responsibilities of the Park Manager in the absence of higher level employees. Performs duties necessary for maintenance and upkeep of state parks to include repair and construction of facilities, operation and repair of motorized equipment, grounds keeping and landscaping activities. Assists with the administration and operation of a state park; and assist park visitors with quality customer service.
- Performs miscellaneous repairs and park improvements, to include carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing, landscaping and grounds keeping.
- Assists with park administrative duties in accordance with Department policy and procedures and planning of long and short-term goals.
- Instruct, supervise and perform routine and preventative maintenance on grounds, buildings and equipment to meet established standards. Maintains a safe work environment.
- Collects and accounts for revenue and produce required reports.
- Repairs and maintains motorized equipment. Performs preventive maintenance on facilities and equipment. Keeps maintenance records.
- Performs and directs clean-up and housekeeping activities to ensure the attractiveness, cleanliness and safety of park grounds and facilities.
- Manages assigned specific operations to include public use areas, and facilities.
- Practice and promote teamwork within Givhans Ferry State Park, throughout the agency and with external agency stakeholders. Represents office as an active member on agency teams assigned throughout the year.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
A high school diploma and general maintenance experience. Agency preferred qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of general maintenance experience.
Additional Requirements
- Position requires medium to heavy lifting, walking, and standing on uneven terrain, crawling, and working at heights. Exposure to weather conditions, various cleaning agents, and other material used in maintaining park facilities and grounds. Will be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays including overtime as needed. Comfortable using Windows, MS Office, and working with data entry on computers. Will be required to clean and maintain cabins, campgrounds, and day use facilities.
- Ability to read and understand written procedures and directions; have the ability to perform simple accounting and administrative duties as required. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Ability to operate a variety of power tools.
- Must possess a valid South Carolina Driver's License.
