Position Summary
The City of Farmers Branch will be testing for the position of Detention Officer on
Wednesday, November 19, 2008. Check in will be at 6:45pm and the test will begin promptly at 7:00pm. To be considered you must completely fill out all sections of the application. Entering "see resume" is not acceptable.
Under general supervision, provides detention, intake, custodial care and release of arrested inmates as prescribed by applicable ordinances and departmental procedures. Provides appropriate information and assistance to the public, department, and law enforcement agencies concerning facility activities and operations; performs related duties as required.
Essential Job Functions
Performs booking procedures into and out of the City detention facility, including logging of property, soliciting data to complete reports, fingerprinting and photographing inmates, conducts searches for weapons and drugs, and seizes contraband. Completes reports on inmates and enters data into computer.
Monitors care of inmates in the detention facility, serving meals, providing minor medical attention, showers, visitors, and telephone calls; maintains physical order and discipline among detention facility inmates; conducts emergency evacuation of inmates and operates related emergency equipment (air pack, fire extinguisher, fire hose, etc.); explains bail and bond out options to inmates; responds to requests and inquiries concerning detention facility activities and operations; issues appropriate inmate prisoner information to the public.
Ensures the safety and security of prisoners by operating electronic and mechanical locking equipment; operates visual and audio equipment; conducts periodic inmate and cell searches seizing contraband; performs maintenance and cleaning of detention facility; completes daily reports of activities and records inmate and staff activity; operates technical computerized equipment as related to detention of inmates; operates a City motor vehicle to conduct City business. Responsible for regular attendance and arriving to work on time.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED required, and one-year recent work experience with the public preferred.
Additional Requirements
- Must be able to work rotating shifts including week-ends and holidays.
- Ability to work overtime and on-call as needed.
- Must be able to successfully complete TCLEOSE Basic Detention Officer's School within twelve (12) months of employment.
- Possession of or ability to obtain valid Texas Driver's License.
- Maintain acceptable driving record.
- Must be a citizen of the United States.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be a High School Graduate or GED equivalent.
- Must have a clear criminal history.
- Must successfully complete written exam, pre-employment drug screen, psychological and physical examination.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in the English language; ability to make correct decisions in emergency situations; ability to understand and proficiently carry out oral and written instructions, procedures, directives, and orders. Skill in the use of tact and courtesy with the general public; ability to proficiently use standard jail equipment (multiple line telephone, computer, two way radio, copier, facsimile machine, oven, microwave, emergency breathing apparatus, oleoresin capsicum propellant, handcuffs, camera equipment, video equipment, fingerprint equipment, and cleaning equipment). Knowledge of modern detention facility practices and procedures; good knowledge of local, state, and federal laws as related to incarceration of persons. Ability to proficiently physically restrain and handcuff a moderately resisting person; ability to drag or carry inmate or employee with minimum weight of 175 lbs. a minimum of 20 yards. Ability to sit or stand from two to eight hours per day.
Working Condtions
Work is usually performed indoors in a climate controlled detention facility. Occasional exposure to hazardous conditions, materials and infectious and contagious diseases. Physical demands require continuous effort with moderately heavy materials; requires lifting, carrying, dragging, stooping, bending, standing, sitting, walking, crawling, and crouching.
