The Children’s Librarian provides cost-effective, quality service, programs, and materials in a variety of formats in order to meet the educational, recreational, and cultural needs of all the citizens of Portland and the surrounding communities. Specifically, the Children’s Librarian is responsible for the development of children’s, adult makerspace, and outreach programming.
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Plans, prepares, and executes a variety of library programming including: After School Program, Toddler Time, Makerspace, Summer Reading Program, Book-a-Palooza, and Outreach Programs
- Coordinates with other library staff for programming topics, needs, and planning.
- Works with Friends of the Library and others to secure funds for programs. Applies for grants, maintains all expenditure documentation and prepares all reports for grantors.
- Welcomes patrons, helping them complete their tasks, and assisting them with donations.
- Answers phones and assists front desk staff with check-in and check-out of items.
- Assists with Spanish-speaking patrons.
- Provides library group tours.
- Assists staff with technical issues and troubleshooting.
- Assesses current children’s collection and systematically select new and popular materials.
- Replaces damaged or out-of-date materials.
- Works with Circulation Team to formulate materials selection strategies.
- Places book orders for selected materials.
- Mentors entry-level and part-time professional and para-professional staff.
- Attends meetings as directed.
- Conducts presentation as instructed.
- Administers close-out of registers and prepares weekly deposits.
- Attends webinars, workshops, and conferences, establishing network of professional colleagues.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Requires a Master’s degree in Library Sciences or related field, and three (3) years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
