The Parks and Recreation Director oversees the planning, development, and administration of all City parks, recreation programs, facilities, and City-owned properties. Deadline to apply is June 19, 2026.
Essential Duties
- Direct all departmental operations, programs, facilities, and staff.
- Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate recreation personnel.
- Attend staff meetings and provide departmental reports to the Mayor.
- Prepare and manage the department budget, monitor expenditures, and process invoices.
- Assist with bids, capital projects, and procurement activities.
- Develop and implement short- and long-range strategic plans.
- Manage grants and pursue outside funding opportunities.
- Oversee maintenance, inspection, and operation or parks and rental properties.
- Inspect rental properties before and after use to ensure proper condition.
- Coordinate community events, sports programs, and tournaments to increase participation and revenue.
- Promote departmental programs and events (subject to City approval).
- Coordinate departmental policies and procedures for approval by City leadership.
Requirements and Physical Demands
- Valid Alabama Driver's License and insurable under City policy.
- Knowledge of applicable sports rules, regulations, and certifications as required.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and flexible hours for events.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks including standing, walking, bending, and lifting.
- Coordinate departmental policies and procedures for approval by City leadership.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- At least 2 years of experience in parks and recreation or a related field is preferred.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Sports Administration, Recreation Management, Parks and Recreation, or a closely related field is desirable.
Certifications and Requirements
- Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) credential through the National Recreation and Park Association preferred but not required.
- Valid Alabama Driver's License required.
- Must successfully pass a background check and drug screening.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays for events and programs.
