Summary Of Duties
General Under basic supervision, the Building Inspector is responsible for conducting on-site field inspections to ensure that new construction and existing properties are in compliance with applicable codes. Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the Beginning level classification in the Building Inspector series. Incumbents follow diversified procedures and implement processes to accomplish end results, within guidelines. Immediate supervision is available upon request. This class is distinguished from Building Inspector, Senior in that the latter is a higher-level class in the series that performs more complex technical, investigative, and supervisory duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill
Essential Job Functions

- Conducts field inspections of ongoing construction to ensure compliance with all applicable building codes.
- Conducts inspections to determine if existing properties are being maintained in compliance with applicable codes
- Responds to requests for code interpretation and application from contractors and property owners
- Maintains records of completed inspections and enters results into computer or Device.
- Reviews plans and specifications, on-site, to ensure construction is in accordance with City-approved plans.
- Completes plan review as needed to check for code deficiencies and verify compliance with local zoning requirements.
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
National, regional, and County building codes and ordinances.
Skills And Abilities
Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
Education
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience
Suggested Two (2) years of experience in construction.
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid Class C Driver’s license (must obtain within 30 days of hire per state law). ICC Residential Energy Code Inspector Certification within one year of hire.
Conditions of Employment
- Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, period background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.
Employees who use their personal vehicle for county business are required to maintain proof of financial responsibility under the Nevada DOT, which includes carrying the minimum liability insurance limits as defined by the Neveda Department of Insurance.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Must possess mobility to work in and around City and private buildings, facilities, and construction sites, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on surface streets; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to
medium physical work, to operate varied tools and equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing field inspections. Employees may be required to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
