Job Summary
Imagine spending your workday in a vibrant coastal city with an ideal climate and daily views of the ocean. The City of Pismo Beach is currently hiring Part-Time Tourism and Events Hosts to assist with both visitor services and city-sponsored events.
This role plays a key part in supporting City events, from setup through breakdown, which includes actively assisting onsite throughout the duration. Hosts will also welcome guests at our airstream location on the downtown promenade, providing information about local attractions, events, and amenities.
We're looking for individuals who are professional, self-motivated, and comfortable working independently in a fast-paced, public-facing setting. The position is part-time, averaging up to 19 hours per week, with some weekend and evening availability required.
This position is not eligible for retired annuitant status.
Under general supervision of the Conference & Visitor's Bureau, greet, receive and provide accurate and helpful information to all visitors while exceeding their expectations with high quality guest services; assist with supporting city events, from setup through breakdown, including actively assisting on site throughout the duration; act as a liaison between visitors, local business, and the City of Pismo Beach; send and receive mail; restock brochures; perform clerical tasks and related work as required. The Visitor Information Center is open 7 days a week. Hours of operation vary.

- Serves as an ambassador to the City of Pismo Beach by greeting guests, answering questions, and providing quality customer service.
- Plays a key part in supporting city events, including pre-event coordination, communication and outreach, as well as setup and breakdown; actively assisting on site throughout the duration of the event; support on-site event services, event check-in, visitor information, customer sales and service, field questions and concerns, and vendor support.
- Keeps up to date with local activities, events, businesses and trends to be able to share up to date information about the City and its happenings and culture.
- Works with the CVB staff promoting local events; opens information center, stocks brochures and checks inventory; monitors displays, cleanliness, and maintenance.
- Responds to visitor inquiries and requests and resolves issues on the phone and in person.
- Welcomes visitors, shares information, answers questions, engages with, and thanks visitors.
- Plans, organizes, and implements all activities of the visitor's center.
- Remains connected to businesses, hotels, and restaurants; compiles and presents prices, specials, and other opportunities for visitors; consolidates visitor information providing calendars and events.
- Assists the Tourism and Events Department team by assembling information packets for individual visitors, refers industry tour and group information requests, and assists in other areas/projects as requested by CVB staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- General knowledge of Pismo Beach and the surrounding areas, businesses, events, natural spaces and history.
- Ability to interact with visitors and residents providing excellent customer service.
- Working with customers to provide information or assistance and exceed their expectations.
- Excellent listening skills, verbal communication, and people skills, meaning the ability to initiate conversation, answer questions, and respond to visitor comments and be able to resolve issues in person and on the phone.
- Greeting guests to determine the purpose of their visit in order to direct them to the proper person or location.
- Speaking to visitors and the general public to provide insight on the City's functions, including tourism information.
- Communicating effectively via in person, in writing, and by telephone, in a prompt, courteous and service-oriented manner.
Ability To:
- Perform responsible clerical support.
- Learn, interpret, and apply administrative, City, and departmental policies and procedures.
- Plan and coordinate events and related staffing.
- Organize, maintain, and update office database and records systems.
- File materials alphabetically, chronologically, and numerically.
- Communicate effectively providing high levels of customer service.
- Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Supplemental Information
Any Combination Of Training And Experience That Would Provide The Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Is Qualifying. A Typical Way To Obtain The Required Qualifications Would Be:
High School Diploma or GED, and some experience involving frequent public contact and customer service in a visitor-serving business.

Part-time employees receive 40 hours of paid sick leave per calendar year.
