Summary
Under the direction of the Deputy Town Administrator, supervises and directs the Recreation Department, including the operation of the Berthoud Recreation Center, indoor sports and recreational programs, outdoor sports and recreation programs, community events, and other similar activities as assigned.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities

- Directly supervises employees in the Recreation and Culture division. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Provides leadership to the Recreation Team by planning, organizing, and directing the operations of recreation facilities, including the Berthoud Recreation Center, and other indoor and outdoor recreation programs.
- Supervises recreation supervisors and staff through appropriate work delegation. Meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve special projects and workload issues. Provides assistance and training in technical issues and responsibilities. Works with employees to correct performance deficiencies
- Assesses the recreation needs of the community and leads staff in planning activities and programs that meets those needs
- Represents the Town at various community and/or business meetings, committees, and task forces; promotes existing and new programs and/or policies.
- Ensures that a variety of sport, recreation and various other programs are planned and implemented for all age groups and demographics
- Evaluates the effectiveness of these programs, plan and implement needed changes, and continually work to identify future needs.
- Provides leadership and direction in the development of short- and long-range plans; gathers, interprets, and prepares data for studies, reports and recommendations; coordinates park and recreation activities with other agencies as needed.
- Prepares a recreation department budget and ensures that is adhered to. Prepares financial and program reports concerning programs, costs, participant numbers and equipment and facility use.
- Promotes recreation programs through an active community relations campaign. Arranges for advertising of programs, as needed, and maintains constant community engagement to ensure maximum use and cost recovery of recreational facilities and programs.
- Develops and implements policies, procedures and standards for efficient and effective operation and maintenance of recreation. Enforces Town of Berthoud expectations and policies. Assures compliance with established policies, procedures, and local ordinances

- Ability to plan, organize, coordinate and implement a comprehensive community recreation programming of activities.

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, both public and private, and the public
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of modern park and recreation programs
- Thorough knowledge of equipment and facilities required in a comprehensive recreation program
- Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of maintenance, construction, and use of public buildings and recreation facilities
- Considerable knowledge of community recreation needs and resources
- Working knowledge of the principles and practices of office management, work organization and supervision
- To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of general office software including word processing and spreadsheets as well as experience with specialized recreational management software.
Education
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in recreation management, public administration, business administration, or related field
Required
Work Experience:
- 7-10 years working in community recreation, with a minimum of three years of high-level executive/management at a municipal or public Recreation agency
- Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated experience in supervising or management of operations and staff at a community recreation center
Preferred
Certificates and Licenses:
- Certified Parks and Recreation Professional certification is highly desired
- Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License
