Job Purpose
To maintain the security and safety of student body, faculty, and staff. Patrol college and maintain security of buildings and grounds. Multiple Positions.
Position Description
- Provide a safe secure environment for students, staff, and guests on campus.
- Establish and maintain a good rapport with students, staff, and community members.
- Helps to create and maintain a working relationship with the local police and fire and rescue departments.
- Assist in development and implementation of action plans to provide a safe environment and immediate response to imminent threats of violence, criminal incidents, emergency medical incidents, and others.
- Regulate student's behavior on campus, restrooms, and other open areas.
- Assist with controlling classroom disturbances or acts of defiance. Request assistance from school administration and/or other police when necessary
- Detain students suspected of narcotics, tobacco, or alcoholic infractions.
- Investigate, review, and report to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, as appropriate, on accidents, incidents and violations of the law.
- Patrol and confront unauthorized persons for questioning and checking for passes and identification cards as needed.
- Assist other law enforcement officers as directed by KCKCCPD.
- Follow KCKCC policies and administrative rules and regulations.
- Maintain proper paperwork/reports to ensure all complaints filed with law enforcement have been forwarded through the chain of command.
- Ensure doors/gates are locked and opened at designated times determined by KCKCCPD.
- Observe and report violations of safety and health codes.
- Demonstrate problem solving and responsible decision-making skills.
- Maintain and project professional appearance as it relates to job performance.
- Patrol and set up for school events as assigned.
- Assume fire/tornado alarm evacuation responsibilities as assigned by KCKCCPD.
- Submit work orders as needed.
- Perform other tasks as may be deemed appropriate by the supervisor and/or KCKCC Chief of Police.
Knowledge, Skills, And Experience
- Thorough knowledge of Kansas Criminal and traffic statutes.
- Thorough knowledge of both College and Departmental policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of campus buildings and grounds.
- Operational knowledge of report writing, computer aided-dispatch, fire, camera, and door access computer systems used by College Police.
- Observational skills sufficient to detect crimes and progress and apprehend offenders and physical fitness necessary to safely affect arrests.
- Knowledge of appropriate first responder procedures to properly respond to and deal with criminal activity and natural disasters to include fires, tornado, and other events that threatens the campus community Must possess the qualifications needed to obtain a state certification; preference will be given to applicants possessing state certification currently.
- Must be able to successfully complete police academy training within one year of appointment, thus obtaining state certification (if not already state certified).
- Ability to pass a Field Training Program (FTO) that may last 12 weeks.
- Must have the ability to patrol the college by foot, bicycle or vehicle and conducts security checks; monitor security cameras; lock and unlock facilities; and provide security services during events, to identify suspicious activity and ensure student, staff, faculty, and visitor safety.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding Law Enforcement and College information. Thorough knowledge of Kansas Criminal and traffic statutes.

Position Qualifications And/or Education
Minimum Qualifications and/or Education
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- One (1) year of experience or training in a security related area or a combination of education and tested experience.
- Must have a valid driver's license and a clear motor vehicle record.
Preferred Qualifications And/or Education
- Evidence of private security or public police experience including knowledge of school and local laws (including search and seizure).
- Evidence of completion in college-level courses in security, psychology, emergency management, or criminal justice.
- Evidence of knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.
- Evidence of knowledge of basic first aid and CPR training.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, and sit. The employee may occasionally push or lift items. The job requires 15% sitting, 70% walking, and 15% standing. The job is performed under temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Work Schedule
29 hours per week. Must be able to work a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours.
