The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a Code Enforcement Officer to join our team. As a part of the Community Resource Unit, Code Enforcement Officers use a collaborative approach to resolve reports of possible ordinance violations. Our team values strong customer service skills as we work with community members to assist them with identifying barriers to bringing properties into compliance. As a full-time member of our team, Code Enforcement Officers typically work Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with flexibility depending on the needs of the department and program. As a non-exempt employee, this position is eligible for overtime.- Responds to citizen complaints about possible code violations and works with citizens to resolve complaints.
- Prepares correspondence and documentation of specific violations by researching building and planning records (current and archived), assessor records (including deeds and property assessment records), DMV records (for vehicle records and registrations and vehicle dealer’s information), previous enforcement actions and case file information, internet, or any other agency documentation pertinent to the enforcement complaint. Uses all compiled documentation to formulate a complete violation history to ensure that all existing complaints are documented and brought into compliance. Provides information on county ordinances and regulations to the general public and other agencies including Justice and Circuit Court in oral and written form.
- Manage interdisciplinary task forces to bring property to compliance through voluntary means, county receivership or tax foreclosure.
- Performs inspection of wrecking yard businesses for annual renewal.
- Performs annual and turnover housing inspection for Marion County Housing Authority.
- May participate in basic incident command training and drills to maintain proficiency in supporting EOC activities, including carrying out field work in connection with EOC operations. May be assigned clerical/support, incident liaison, or other duties at any location within or near the county. Emergency Management duties may require working long hours outside normal business hours, weekend/holiday work, and may occur with little or no advance notice.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING- Associate degree in planning, environmental science, sanitation or health, law enforcement, or a related field; AND
- Two years of experience working with the public in areas that relate to ordinance enforcement, planning, building and land use inspection, environmental health and science or closely related field; OR
- Any satisfactory combination of work, education, training, or experience relevant to the position, as determined by Marion County.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS- Must possess a current driver's license in the applicant's state of residence and an acceptable driving history. Marion County will obtain a copy of the driving record for all qualified applicants from Driver and Motor Vehicle Services and review the driving record according to the Marion County policy and procedure for Driving on County Business. - The finalist for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check; however, conviction of a crime may not necessarily disqualify an individual for this position.
