Under general direction of the Sheriff; serves as principal assistant to the Sheriff for all department operations; serves as commander of the patrol and investigations division; and performs other work as assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The employee in this class is the assistant department head and services at the pleasure of the Sheriff. Undersheriff is distinguished from the class of Commander in that the latter class is a division commander reporting to the Undersheriff.

- Develops, evaluates and implements policies and procedures for assigned division to meet the Sheriff's goals and objectives; develops and evaluates training programs to develop division personnel and improve the delivery of law enforcement services.
- Manages the daily operation of the Sheriff's office on behalf of the Sheriff; provides direction and support to subordinate managers and supervisors, and advice and consultation to the Sheriff in assigned program areas; investigates and resolves complaints and concerns regarding departmental services and facilities; acts as liaison with other law enforcement and public safety agencies and the courts.
- Estimates budget needs for law enforcement operations; writes justifications for funding requests; monitors expenditures to assure compliance with budgets; accounts for variances between projected and actual expenditures; prepares and presents information in written and oral form to the Sheriff and officials of other agencies.
- Selects, directs and evaluates department staff; instructs supervisory and subordinate management staff in the requirements of jobs; trains staff in the work procedures; advises staff on resolution of problems; hears and responds to employee problems, concerns and complaints; responds to formal grievances on behalf of the Sheriff; issues warnings and reprimands for inadequate performance and improper behavior; imposes and recommends[1] disciplinary actions; serves as a member of the management collective bargaining team.
- Develops staff schedules; organizes work to be done by staff; assigns staff to specific cases and to special projects; coordinates activities of staff to ensure effective coverage and prompt response; trains staff in law enforcement methods, application of policies and procedures and use of law enforcement tools; evaluates staff performance.
- Prepares reports and correspondence for other government agencies, members of the public and county management; reviews reports prepared by other staff to ensure they are complete and consistent with policies and procedures.
- Maintains order and security within the detention.
- Performs patrol functions; monitors detainees in the jail; investigates crimes; enforces public safety regulations; enhances community relations.

A supervisor is said to EFFECTIVELY RECOMMEND disciplinary action if the supervisor is expected to determine when discipline is necessary, document the reasons for taking discipline, and present the information to a higher level manager/supervisor for final implementation
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge and Ability:
Knowledge of current methods, practices and techniques of law enforcement, crime detection and investigation, crime prevention, and detention facility administration; principles and practices of management and supervision; methods applicable to law enforcement agencies; practices and techniques of budgeting; relevant federal, state and local laws including legislative and case law related to arrest, search and seizure, evidence, and prosecution of offenders; use and care of firearms, communications equipment and other police gear.
Ability to effectively administer projects and operations consistent with the Sheriff's policies; supervise staff; plan, direct and evaluate the work of law enforcement staff; work effectively under the pressure of emergencies, threat of danger, deadlines, and conflicting demands; work effectively with staff, representatives of the courts, legal professions, other law enforcement agencies, and members of the general public; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees; gain cooperation through discussion and persuasion; collect, interpret and evaluate narrative and statistical data pertaining to policy, fiscal, Sheriff's Office operation and other law enforcement matters; analyze policies, regulations, projects, activities, and methods; select alternatives, project the consequences of proposed actions, implement administrative policies and work programs consistent with laws and Sheriff's policies and goals; understand, interpret and apply laws and regulations; present findings, recommendations and policies to individuals and groups in an understandable and persuasive manner; communicate effectively in writing on matters related to department policies, funding, and operations.
Special Requirements
Possess a valid driver's license for equipment to be operated; and possess ability to pass a background investigation.
Experience And Training
Any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is:
Fifteen (15) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience; possession of a Nevada POST Supervisor certificate.

Nevada Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS)(1)
- Humboldt County, Nevada contributes 36.75% of an eligible Regular Member's salary for retirement.
- Humboldt County, Nevada contributes 58.75% of an eligible Sheriff's Office Deputy's salary for retirement.
Nevada Deferred Compensation Program (NDC):
- The NDC is voluntary retirement savings program for employees of the State of Nevada, NSHE and other local government employers.
- The program is designed to supplement other retirement savings and pensions.
- Contributions are made pre-tax and investment earnings are tax-deferred or you may invest on pre-tax (Roth) basis and your investment earnings will be tax free upon eligible withdrawal.
- Both types of deductions are made through payroll.
Insurance Coverage
Insurance Stipend
- Humboldt County, Nevada provides a monthly insurance stipend to assist employees who elect to participate in any of the County offered insurance plans.
- The stipend for Fiscal Year 2026-2027 is $1,300.00 per month for Employee only, Employee and Spouse, and Employee and Child(ren) Health Plan Options and $2,000.00 per month for the Employee and Family Health Plan Option listed below.
Health Insurance Eligibility:
- Employees working 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health insurance coverage.
- Eligible employees as defined in the group health insurance plan are eligible to enroll in the group health insurance plan effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment.
- Dependents of employees, as defined in the current plan booklet, are also eligible for coverage under the insurance plan at the employee's expense.
- Employees must authorize a payroll deduction for the share of the health coverage premium to be paid by the employee.

Leave Plans
Annual Leave
- All full-time employees will earn annual leave beginning from their initial date of hire at a rate of .0385 hours earned per hour's paid (3).
- Part-time employees who regularly work 20 hours or more per week will earn annual leave on a pro-rated basis.
- Employees earn additional annual leave hours at 3, 6, 11, 16 and 21 years of service up to a maximum of 192 hours per year.
- While on probationary period, an employee cannot take annual leave for the first six (6) months; the employee still accrues vacation leave during this time.
Sick Leave:
- Eligible Humboldt County, Nevada employees accrue sick leave at the rate of .0577 hours for each hour worked up to a maximum accrual of 120 hours per year with a maximum accrual of 980 hours.
Holiday Leave:
- Eligible Humboldt County, Nevada employees enjoy twelve (12) paid holidays per year plus one additional day as a floating holiday (4).

- To that end, the County has a generous Tuition Reimbursement policy for accredited courses, reimbursing up to $1,500 per year (5) in educational expenses.
Note: Humboldt County, Nevada provides benefits to regular employees. Most part-time positions are ineligible for benefits.
1: PERS retirement benefits are only available to employees hired in positions that work 20 hours per week or more on a regular basis. Positions of less than 20 hours per week (or less than 1040 hours in a fiscal year) will instead receive Social Security contributions.
2: Coinsurance is the percentage of costs paid by employees after they have paid/met their respective deductibles.
3: Employees will accrue annual leave during their introductory period but are not allowed to use annual leave until you they have been employed continuously for at least 6 months.
