Under general supervision, provides materials, resources, and programs within a Library division to the general public and participates in and supervises work activities of assigned staff.

TASKS:
- Researches requests for information by users to assist patrons/public in the selection and location of books and materials;
- Assists in the selection, ordering, and cataloging of books, periodicals, government documents, and other materials;
- Examines and selects materials to be withdrawn, discarded, outdated, repaired, and replaced;
- Represents the Library in public forums, including school visits, classroom talks, orientation sessions, library tours, and community events;
- Plans and implements programs including, but not limited to, storytelling, films, arts and crafts, training workshops, and other activities;
- Provides reference service to assist the public with questions, advise readers, provide instruction, and monitor the use of the catalog system, online service, and public access to computers;
- Creates and designs bibliographies, flyers, and brochures for distribution, edits, and proofreads print materials produced by the Library;
- Prepares and completes statistical reports; Supports, implements, and enforces Division policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in Library & Information Sciences and two years of experience OR Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of ten years of experience in a public library work environment. Must possess at the time of application and maintain a valid California Driver’s License. Depending on the area of specialty, below is a list of additional requirements;
- Technical Services:analyze and propose technological solutions; copy cataloging (some original cataloging) of materials in all formats; provide monthly statistics for usage of databases and materials; manage and troubleshoot issues with electronic resources, gaming systems, laptops, and other equipment.
- Children Librarian:knowledgeable of qualitychild development, children's literature, and all aspects of programming, outreach, and collection development for Children's Services; Preferred English and Spanish bilingual verbal and written communications skills and understanding of all aspects of bilingual programming, outreach, and collection development for Children's Services;
- Adult Services:provide references, readers' advisory, computer, database, and referral services to Library patrons directly, by telephone, and via the library website; assist patrons with materials selection; community outreach and programming;
- Hispanic Services: fluency in English and Spanish; communicate inclusively with cultural sensitivity; knowledge of Adult reference, computer, and referral services, assisting patrons at all professional levels, community outreach, and programming.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
- Knowledge of public library operations practices and procedures. Modern office practices and procedures; City policies and procedures; conflict resolution techniques, and Library Systems/theory/principles related to circulation, cataloging, Dewey Decimal System, inventory;
- Skilled in organizing and planning to ensure high productivity; utilizing computer databases to research, maintain, and update records and files; working with students, establishing and maintaining productive working relationships; resolving day-to-day issues and concerns;
- Ability to resolve and address issues from the public and perform essential duties with little supervision; organize and prioritize various projects and multiple tasks in an effective and timely manner; gather, read, analyze, and interpret data; exercise good judgment; post and maintain records accurately; maintain cultural awareness and perform repetitive duties;
- Proficient in operating department office equipment, including computers and software, fax machines, copiers, scanners, and other specialized equipment, including industry-related software packages.
THE SELECTION PROCESS: Applicants whose experience best meets the city's needs will be invited to participate in the examination for this position. Candidates must have access to a computer with internet, video, and audio capabilities to participate in our examination process.
The examination may consist of one or more of the following: (1) Training & Experience Evaluation, (2) Writing Exercise, and (3) Qualifications Appraisal Interview with a panel of subject matter experts. Candidates must receive a score of 70 or higher to have their names placed on the active eligibility list for one year. The top three ranks on the Eligibility List will have their application materials forwarded to the hiring authority for a selection interview.
