The City of Bonney Lake is hiring for a Mechanic I position in the Streets Division of our Public Works team! General Purpose
Performs a variety of routine level repairs on all City Fleet vehicles, construction equipment, and other types of power equipment.
Supervision Received
Works under the daily guidance of Mechanic II and daily supervision of the designated Assistant Superintendent of Public Works.
Supervision Exercised
None. May exercise technical or functional guidance, assistance, training and direction over intern or temporary employees.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The Mechanic I is an entry level position in the Mechanic Series. Incumbents are expected to have general knowledge of mechanical systems, theory, operation and troubleshooting, construction, maintenance and repair procedures and practices. Once trained, the incumbent performs routine level maintenance work in the division to which they are assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities
Peripheral Duties
May serve on various City committees as designated by supervisor.
- One (1) year experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy duty or commercial size vehicles; and
- A combination of education and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the essential functions of the positions.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of the operating principles of diesel, gasoline, and electronic engines; knowledge of automatic and manual transmissions; knowledge of electronic/electrical systems, vehicle and equipment computer systems, suspension and steering systems, brakes, heating and air conditioning systems, hydraulic systems, and fuel injection systems and repair of such systems; extensive knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, and materials used in the troubleshooting and repair of light duty vehicles and heavy duty equipment including knowledge of scanning tools;
- Skill in the operation of the listed equipment; skill in diagnosis and troubleshooting issues with equipment; and
- Ability to operate electronic diagnosis equipment; ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment; ability to research, read and understand manufacturers’ repair manuals, blueprints, schematics, and parts manuals; ability to drive and operate various types of equipment, compressor systems, and generators, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, vendors, and outside agencies, ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner to audiences of varying degrees of subject familiarity; ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing; ability to operate a computer and fleet maintenance programs; ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.

Special Requirements
A valid Washington State Driver's License is required at the time of appointment and a driving record acceptable to the City and the City’s insurance carrier. Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License may be required within six months of employment. May require possession of one or more ASE Master Automotive Technician certifications or equivalent.

Vehicles and equipment includes police cruisers, motorcycles, passenger cars and vans, pickup trucks, aerial devices, boom trucks, solid waste refuse trucks, motor graders, backhoes, loaders, paving machines, asphalt grinders, snow plows and sanders, portable cranes, flusher trucks, street sweepers, medic units, tractor-trailer trucks, roller-compactors, vactors, mowers, chippers, tractors, auxiliary generators, air compressors, trailers, and water pumps; Requires the ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid repairs or adjustments, knowledge of engine diagnosis equipment; city vehicles and heavy equipment, mechanic tools, drill press, welder, fork lift, hydraulic press, personal computer, including automated fleet maintenance systems; word processing and spreadsheets; copy and fax machine; radio and phone.
Physical Demands

- Work is performed primarily at the City’s Fleet Operations Repair Facility. While most work is performed inside the shop, repairs are made in the field when necessary. Field work is performed during all types of weather and may be on a work site with other hazards. The work requires significant mobility and agility to complete repairs. Due to large shop doors and the size of some equipment, some work may be performed in damp, cool surroundings. The position involves considerable physical activity with exposure to safety hazards normally associated with repair work accomplished on light and heavy equipment.
- Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate tools, computers and various pieces of office equipment.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand or sit; walk; talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
