DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF/ EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST
Full-time, Grade 22, FLSA Exempt

Our city is entering an exciting new phase as we expand and strengthen our fire services to keep pace with our growth. We're building Fire Station 3, making significant investments in equipment and infrastructure, and adding a full-time Deputy Fire Chief to our team. We are looking for an experienced leader to help guide this progress while honoring the legacy of our volunteer program and the critical role our volunteer firefighters play in serving our community.
The Deputy Fire Chief will perform a range of complex administrative, technical, professional, and supervisory duties. Additionally, some key areas in responsibilities include overseeing the department's safety and training program, and overseeing volunteer firefighters and fire operation of the department. This position is also responsible for the city's comprehensive Emergency Management program and services.
Qualifications
The Deputy Fire Chief will set a standard of excellence for the department and is an example for others to follow. We are seeking applicants who have the following minimum qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED, and graduation from an accredited college or university with an associates degree or higher in fire science or a related field.
- Eight (8) years of paid or verifiable active volunteer experience in broad government fire service-related work to include a minimum of four years (4) of supervisory experience as a superior officer (for example Captain, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief). Will also consider an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Utah driver license and a driving record acceptable to Tooele City's risk management and insurance standards.
- Current Utah State Firefighter I & II certifications
- Hazmat Awareness & Operations
- Fire Instructor I
- Current Utah State Fire Officer I certification
- Current Utah State Fire Officer II, or obtained within 24 months from assignment to position or next reasonable training time as coordinated with the Fire Chief.
- Successfully completed all required Homeland Security courses including NIMS and ICS training, or completed within 12 months from assignment to position or next reasonable training time as coordinated with the Fire Chief.
- Inspector I, or obtained within 12 months from assignment to position or next reasonable training time as coordinated with the Fire Chief.
- Hazmat Tech, or obtained within 12 months from assignment to position or next reasonable training time as coordinated with the Fire Chief.
The Deputy Fire Chief Must Also
- Have primary residency within Tooele City limits (or relocate within 6 months of appointment).
- Portray a polished and professional image on behalf of Tooele City.
- Be able to pass required medical standards for donning a respirator and fire safety PPE.
- Be able to work non-traditional hours as needed and is subject to emergency call back 24 hours per day 365 days per year.
